Ayutthaya
Brick stupas, river light and a slower encounter with Thailand’s former capital.
Plan your Ayutthaya visit
Ayutthaya is more rewarding as a small selection of temple sites than as a checklist of ruins. Stay overnight if you can: it gives you time to break during the hot middle of the day and return to the river in the evening. The historic area is spread out, so plan your transport before setting off.
Suggested stay: 1–2 nights · Central Thailand
The visit lengths and transfer ranges in this guide are planning estimates. Opening, access, weather and prices can change; use the linked official sources before a special journey.
Why visit Ayutthaya?
This former capital offers a different pace from Bangkok and a tangible sense of scale, craftsmanship and lost urban life. The river setting and neighbourhood streets matter alongside the celebrated ruins. One night works for a focused visit; two nights make room for museums, food and an unhurried second circuit.
Best things to do in Ayutthaya
Choose a small number of priorities and group nearby stops. The suggested circuits leave room for heat, meals and slower travel.

Wat Mahathat
Visit the brick remains and the Buddha head among tree roots with care. Keep your head lower when posing near the Buddha image and stay off fragile structures. Allow about 45–60 minutes and combine it with another central site rather than crossing the city immediately.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Give the three principal chedis and surrounding foundations time to register. An early visit is easier in the heat and makes a good starting point for understanding the former royal precinct. Allow around an hour; shade is limited.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram
Set aside a separate late-afternoon visit for this riverside temple complex, subject to current opening times. Arrange your return transport in advance. The site is a monument, not a climbing frame; do not step onto closed terraces for a photograph.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
Explore the large chedi, Buddha images and active temple grounds. Dress for worship as well as sightseeing and follow local access signs. This stop sits outside the central ruin cluster, so include it in a planned vehicle circuit.

Chao Sam Phraya National Museum
Use a museum visit to add context to the ruins and as a possible indoor pause. Check opening days and which galleries are operating before arrival. Allow at least an hour rather than using it only as a quick escape from the sun.

A riverside boat circuit
A private or shared boat can connect the landscape and outlying temples. Confirm the actual stops, duration, life jackets and whether admission is included. Treat it as transport and sightseeing, not a promise that every temple can be visited before closing.

A short cycling circuit
Choose a modest central loop in cooler hours only if you are comfortable with local roads. Check brakes, lights and helmets; a tuk-tuk or hired car may be a better option with young children. Distances look short on a map but feel longer in the heat.

Roti sai mai and local streets
Look for the city’s spun-sugar roti sweet around U-Thong Road and combine it with a short neighbourhood walk. Ask about ingredients where allergies matter. Keep this a food and craft stop rather than expecting every shop to offer the same demonstration.
Your suggested Ayutthaya itinerary
Suggested day 1
Day one: arrive from Bangkok, check in and choose Wat Mahathat plus Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Break during the hottest hours and visit Wat Chaiwatthanaram later if transport and opening times align.
Suggested day 2
Day two: choose the museum or Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, then have a relaxed lunch before returning to Bangkok or continuing your route.
Suggested day 3
With a second night: add a short boat circuit and time for local streets. Do not fill every cooler hour with another ruin.
Use this as a suggested sequence, not a fixed tour timetable. Arrival and departure times may make the first and last days much shorter.
Where to stay in Ayutthaya
A central historic-island base reduces transfers between the main ruins. A riverfront hotel gives a different atmosphere, while properties across the railway side of the river can require additional journeys. Ask where your driver can collect you and whether late dinners are available nearby.

Plan the day around conditions
Keep the most exposed walking for cooler hours, carry water and leave room for a rest. For boats, forest paths and swimming, follow the current local advice rather than a fixed itinerary.
Check the actual booking
Confirm the exact pickup, room or activity format, what is included and the cancellation terms. A similar name or photograph does not guarantee the same location or experience.
Respect the place
At temples, cover shoulders and knees and follow shoe rules. Ask before photographing people; at natural sites keep your distance from wildlife and take rubbish away.

How to get to Ayutthaya
Allow roughly 1½–2½ hours from Bangkok by road or rail plus local transfers, depending on departure point and service. The train station is not in the middle of the main ruin cluster. A two-site day trip is more realistic than a long loop of every temple. For Chiang Mai, check whether your chosen long-distance service stops at Ayutthaya and reserve it before relying on that connection.
Best time to visit Ayutthaya
Cooler months make exposed temple grounds easier to explore, but early starts help throughout the year. In hot months, keep an indoor or hotel break between circuits. Rain can make brick steps slippery; river and local flooding conditions matter more than a generic countrywide forecast.
Hidden gems and details to notice
Notice the different silhouettes of chedis and prangs rather than treating all ruins as the same. A quiet riverbank pause can make the scale of the former city easier to imagine. Keep food stops and residential lanes part of the visit, with permission before photographing people.
Ayutthaya travel FAQ
Is one night enough?
One night works for a focused selection of temples and a cooler morning. Two nights let you add a museum or boat trip without compressing the day.
Do I need a bicycle?
No. Cycling is optional and depends on confidence, weather and your group. A negotiated tuk-tuk circuit can be more comfortable.
Can I walk from the station to all the ruins?
The main sites are spread out and the station is outside the central cluster. Arrange local transport and avoid planning the whole visit on foot.
Should I buy a combined temple ticket?
Compare the current combined offer with your actual site list. Do not add extra stops simply to justify a ticket.
How many nights should I allow in Ayutthaya?
Our suggested starting point is 1–2 nights. Add time if you want several full-day outings or a slower arrival day; reduce the activity list before compressing the stay.
Do I need to pre-book every activity?
No. Reserve the activities or transport that are central to your route, but leave weather-dependent outings flexible and check current opening before a special journey.
Can I follow this guide with children?
Adapt walking distance, heat exposure, room occupancy and transport to your own children. Check the exact operator’s equipment and conditions; a general family label is not enough.
Are the accommodation links direct hotel bookings?
The buttons are clearly labelled Booking.com searches. Check the property, room and final price before booking; we may earn commission at no extra cost to you.
Where to go after Ayutthaya
Choose the next base around your available nights and actual transport connections, rather than adding a stop because it appears nearby on a map.
