Phuket

Choose your beach, discover Old Town and leave space between the excursions.

Plan your Phuket visit

Phuket is a large island with very different neighbourhoods. Patong’s nightlife, Kata’s beach-resort feel, quieter northern sands and Phuket Old Town should not be treated as the same holiday. Choose a base around the evenings and beach days you actually want, then build a small number of outings around it.

Suggested stay: 4–5 nights · Southern Thailand · Andaman Coast

The visit lengths and transfer ranges in this guide are planning estimates. Opening, access, weather and prices can change; use the linked official sources before a special journey.

Why visit Phuket?

The island offers a broad range of accommodation, a major airport and enough variety for a beach holiday with cultural and food-based excursions. The trade-off is distance and traffic. A hotel that suits your budget but lies far from your preferred beach can turn each easy-looking day into repeated taxi journeys.

Best things to do in Phuket

Choose a small number of priorities and group nearby stops. The suggested circuits leave room for heat, meals and slower travel.

Phuket Old Town

Explore a compact circuit around Thalang Road, Soi Romanee and adjoining streets. Look at the shophouses and trading history rather than using the area only as a photo backdrop. Combine the walk with lunch and a museum or gallery if the weather suits.

A beach day at your chosen base

Compare the exact stretch of sand, shade and sea conditions before committing to a long outing. Respect red flags and lifeguard advice. The most convenient beach is often the one you can enjoy safely without a lengthy daily transfer.

Wat Chalong

Visit as a religious site with appropriate dress and quiet behaviour. Allow time for a focused visit and avoid combining it with too many distant attractions. Check which interiors are open and follow signs about shoes and photography.

A Phang Nga Bay excursion

Compare routes by departure pier, time aboard and group size. Ask about kayak arrangements, life jackets, included fees and weather cancellation. A bay landscape trip is different from an open-sea snorkelling day; choose according to your interests.

An Old Town food-market evening

Check the actual market calendar before travelling from your beach. Browse first, then choose a few fresh dishes with a place to sit. Agree a pickup point away from the busiest street if you are returning by car.

A coastal viewpoint

Choose a safely accessible viewpoint in suitable weather, keeping children away from unprotected edges. Do not rely on a rushed stop beside a busy road. Pair one viewpoint with a nearby beach rather than circling the island for several similar scenes.

A Thai cooking class

Use a cooking session as a satisfying land-based alternative to another boat trip. Confirm transport, menu choice and vegetarian ingredients in advance. A smaller class with clear hands-on time may be more useful than a long market-shopping itinerary.

A quiet north-coast or resort day

Allow one day without a cross-island outing. A slower beach, pool or spa day can balance Old Town and boat excursions. Check safe swimming conditions and avoid assuming that a remote location guarantees a suitable sea for children.

Your suggested Phuket itinerary

Suggested day 1

Day one: transfer to your chosen beach, check in and eat locally.

Suggested day 2

Day two: have a proper beach day with no cross-island journey.

Suggested day 3

Day three: visit Old Town for a walk and meal. Add a fourth or fifth day for one carefully chosen boat excursion and a weather buffer.

Use this as a suggested sequence, not a fixed tour timetable. Arrival and departure times may make the first and last days much shorter.

Where to stay in Phuket

Choose Kata or Kamala for a beach-resort base with local services, Patong only if its busier atmosphere appeals, and northern beaches for a more resort-led stay. Old Town is a different experience and not a beach location. Check transfer time and whether your room requires steep paths or stairs.

Katathani Phuket Beach Resort

Kata Noi

Best for: A beach-resort stay in the southern part of the island.

Consider before booking: Compare wings, room location and travel time for Old Town or airport outings.

Essential travel tips for Phuket

Plan the day around conditions

Keep the most exposed walking for cooler hours, carry water and leave room for a rest. For boats, forest paths and swimming, follow the current local advice rather than a fixed itinerary.

Check the actual booking

Confirm the exact pickup, room or activity format, what is included and the cancellation terms. A similar name or photograph does not guarantee the same location or experience.

Respect the place

At temples, cover shoulders and knees and follow shoe rules. Ask before photographing people; at natural sites keep your distance from wildlife and take rubbish away.

How to get to Phuket

Airport-to-hotel journeys can range from a short northern transfer to roughly 1–2 hours for southern resort areas, especially in traffic. Confirm the real door-to-door time for your chosen beach. Boat excursions may involve a substantial road transfer to the pier. For Khao Sok, reserve a separate half-day travel block rather than adding it as a quick detour.

Best time to visit Phuket

Around November to April is generally a more straightforward starting point for an Andaman beach-and-boat stay. During the southwest-monsoon period, surf and currents can make west-coast swimming unsuitable even when the sky is bright. Respect flags, check operator notices and have a good land-based plan.

Hidden gems and details to notice

Notice the difference between Phuket’s trading-town streets and resort coast. Choose one or two food stops with enough time to enjoy them, and avoid planning beach, Old Town, temples and a boat excursion all in a single day. The best base is the one that reduces unnecessary driving.

Phuket travel FAQ

Is Patong the best place to stay?

Only if you want its busy nightlife and resort atmosphere. Other beaches suit quieter stays, while Old Town suits food and heritage rather than a beach holiday.

Can I swim throughout the year?

Conditions vary by beach and day. Monsoon surf and currents can be hazardous; follow lifeguard advice and red flags.

Can I visit Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay in a day?

Operators offer day trips, but compare the pier transfer, boat duration, conditions and time at each stop. Choose one outing that matches your interests.

Is Phuket Old Town beside the main beaches?

No. It is a separate town area and needs a planned road journey from most west-coast resorts.

How many nights should I allow in Phuket?

Our suggested starting point is 4–5 nights. Add time if you want several full-day outings or a slower arrival day; reduce the activity list before compressing the stay.

Do I need to pre-book every activity?

No. Reserve the activities or transport that are central to your route, but leave weather-dependent outings flexible and check current opening before a special journey.

Can I follow this guide with children?

Adapt walking distance, heat exposure, room occupancy and transport to your own children. Check the exact operator’s equipment and conditions; a general family label is not enough.

Are the accommodation links direct hotel bookings?

The buttons are clearly labelled Booking.com searches. Check the property, room and final price before booking; we may earn commission at no extra cost to you.

Where to go after Phuket

Choose the next base around your available nights and actual transport connections, rather than adding a stop because it appears nearby on a map.
