Thailand travel checklist
Documents, bookings and practical checks before you leave.
Check your own entry conditions
Visa or visa-exemption eligibility depends on nationality, passport type, purpose and length of stay. Rules can change, so use your Thai embassy and the official Thai e-Visa channel before booking a long stay. Do not rely on an old article’s allowance or assume that a travelling companion has the same entitlement.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card
The official TDAC is separate from a visa. The Thai Immigration Bureau says non-Thai arrivals must submit the arrival information within the three-day window before arrival, including the arrival date. Use the official free government service and check its current exceptions and instructions. Complete each traveller’s required details, including children, and retain the confirmation.
Passport and onward travel
Check passport validity, blank pages and entry conditions with the relevant official source and your airline. Keep onward or return travel evidence and the address of your first accommodation accessible. Save offline copies separately from the originals and make sure names match across passports, tickets and bookings.
Health preparation
Arrange personalised travel-health advice in good time for your itinerary and medical history. Check your travel insurance covers your intended activities and any pre-existing conditions. Carry prescribed medication in original packaging and check Thai rules for the specific medicine before travelling; do not assume a medicine legal at home can enter without documentation.
Book the fixed points
Reserve the first hotel, important flights or sleepers and any time-sensitive lake package. For a family, confirm the actual room occupancy and child-seat arrangements in writing. Leave weather-dependent boat excursions flexible where possible and keep a final buffer night before an international departure.
Money, connectivity and offline essentials
Carry more than one payment method, a modest cash reserve and a plan if your phone is lost. Save hotel names and addresses in both English and Thai where available. Download maps, transport confirmations and insurance details. A mobile-data plan helps, but it does not replace offline access to the next hotel.
Pack for the real activities
Bring temple-appropriate clothing, sun protection, a refillable bottle where safe water is available, grippy shoes and a light rain layer. A dry bag is useful for boat transfers. Avoid overpacking if the route includes a floating lodge or small boat; ask about the luggage allowance and storage arrangements.
Recheck close to departure
Read current travel advice, regional weather notices and any park closures. Reconfirm the airport code, pickup time and final transfer sequence. Check restaurant and attraction opening on the day before a special journey. A short final check is more useful than assuming every saved booking remains unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Is TDAC the same as a visa?
No. It is an arrival-information requirement. Check visa or exemption eligibility separately.
Do I pay for the official TDAC?
The official government TDAC service is free. Use the Immigration Bureau’s own website and avoid unnecessary paid intermediaries.
Can I use one checklist for the whole family?
Use one shared booking list, but check each person’s passport, entry conditions, medication and insurance individually.
