Choose your coast around the season
Sri Lanka’s weather varies between regions. Use the broad patterns below to choose a starting route, then check the forecast and local conditions nearer your trip.
December to March: the south and west coasts are generally a useful starting point for a beach-focused route. Explore the December–March itinerary.
May to September: consider east-coast bases such as Trincomalee and Arugam Bay. See the April–November itinerary and adjust it to your exact month.
Transition months: showers and sea conditions can be less predictable. Keep outdoor activities flexible and allow extra time between stops.
Rain is possible in any month, and good weather on land does not guarantee safe sea conditions. Use the destination guides for more local planning context.
Pack for your route
Keep luggage manageable and adjust this starting list to your activities and accommodation.
Light clothing, plus something that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits.
Comfortable walking shoes and a light layer for the hill country.
A rain layer, sun protection and insect repellent.
A suitable travel adapter, charging cables and a power bank.
Offline maps and copies of travel documents, reservations and insurance details.
