We've taken this train journey more than once, and every trip has been different. Sometimes the tea plantations were hidden beneath the morning mist, while on other occasions the skies were perfectly clear. That's one of the reasons we never get tired of this route.
The Kandy to Ella train ride: Sri Lanka's most beautiful journey
Few train journeys in the world have achieved the legendary status of the railway between Kandy and Ella. Frequently listed among the world's most scenic train rides, this unforgettable journey takes travellers deep into the heart of Sri Lanka's spectacular hill country. Over the course of nearly seven hours, the landscape transforms dramatically. Bustling cities give way to rolling tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, dense forests, colourful villages and breathtaking valleys. The train winds through dozens of tunnels, crosses historic bridges and climbs high into the central highlands before descending towards the charming town of Ella.
Unlike many tourist attractions, the magic of this experience isn't just the destination—it's every single kilometre in between. Whether you're visiting Sri Lanka for the first time or returning for another adventure, the Kandy to Ella train ride deserves a place on your itinerary.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
We've travelled this route several times, and every journey has felt different. Sometimes the mountains are covered in mist, while on other days the tea plantations seem to stretch endlessly beneath bright blue skies. No matter the weather, the experience never disappoints.
Why is the Kandy to Ella train so famous?
There are scenic train rides all over the world, but very few combine dramatic landscapes with authentic local culture in quite the same way. The railway was originally built by the British during the colonial era to transport tea from the plantations in the central highlands to Colombo's harbour. More than a century later, the trains still follow the same winding mountain route. Today, the railway is used by both locals and travellers. School children commute between villages, tea workers travel to nearby towns and visitors from around the world share the same carriages, creating a uniquely authentic travel experience.
Unlike modern high-speed trains, this journey is intentionally slow. The train rarely exceeds 40 km/h, allowing you to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery outside your window. It isn't unusual for travellers to spend hours simply watching the landscape pass by while chatting with fellow passengers and enjoying freshly prepared snacks sold by local vendors.
What makes this journey so special?
Every section of the route offers something different. One moment you'll be surrounded by endless emerald-green tea fields stretching across rolling hills. Minutes later, you'll pass through dense eucalyptus forests before emerging onto open mountain ridges with panoramic views over deep valleys.
Throughout the journey you'll encounter:
Endless tea plantations
Tea pickers in colourful saris
Colonial railway stations
Small mountain villages
Waterfalls during the rainy season
Mist-covered forests
Spectacular viewpoints
Vegetable farms
Traditional Sri Lankan homes
Historic railway bridges
Dozens of tunnels carved through the mountains
The changing scenery is one of the main reasons travellers rarely get bored during the seven-hour journey. One of our favourite moments comes shortly after leaving Haputale. The train slows down as it winds around the mountains, and suddenly the valleys open up on both sides. It's one of those moments when almost everyone quietly looks out of the window instead of at their phone.
One thing that surprised us was how quiet the carriage became during the most scenic stretches near Haputale. Even local passengers seemed to pause for a moment and look out of the window as the valleys opened up.
Kandy to Ella route
The railway passes through some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful mountain towns.
Kandy - Your journey begins in Sri Lanka's cultural capital, surrounded by lush hills and famous for the Temple of the Tooth.
Peradeniya - Soon after departure you'll pass the beautiful botanical gardens before beginning the gradual climb into the hill country.
Hatton - Known as the gateway to Adam's Peak and surrounded by countless tea plantations. As the train climbs higher, you'll notice the air becoming noticeably cooler. We always keep a light sweater within reach, even on warm days in Kandy.
Nanu Oya - This station serves nearby Nuwara Eliya, often called "Little England" because of its colonial architecture and cool climate. Stepping onto the platform at Nanu Oya feels completely different from Kandy. The cooler mountain air and colonial atmosphere immediately make it clear you've arrived in Sri Lanka's tea country.
Many travellers choose to spend one or two nights here before continuing to Ella.
Haputale - One of the most scenic parts of the journey. Expect dramatic mountain views, cloud forests and beautiful tea estates. Have some extra time? Haputale is one of Sri Lanka's most underrated destinations. Read our Haputale Travel Guide for viewpoints, tea estates and hidden gems beyond the railway.
Bandarawela - A peaceful mountain town surrounded by forests and farmland.
Ella - The final destination and one of Sri Lanka's most popular travel destinations, famous for Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and countless cafés overlooking the mountains.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
If you're travelling from Kandy to Ella, we recommend planning at least two nights in Ella. After spending most of the day on the train, it's nice to have enough time to explore Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge and the town itself without feeling rushed.
Planning to stay a little longer? Our complete Ella travel guide includes the best cafés, scenic hikes, waterfalls, viewpoints and hidden gems to help you make the most of your visit.
Should you travel from Kandy to Ella or Ella to Kandy?
This is one of the questions travellers ask most often. The good news? There isn't really a wrong choice.
Kandy → Ella
This is the classic direction and the one most visitors follow as part of a round trip through Sri Lanka.
Advantages:
Fits most travel itineraries
Gradually climbs into the mountains
Slightly better timing for sightseeing in Ella afterwards
Disadvantages:
Usually more crowded
Ella → Kandy
Exactly the same railway in reverse.
Advantages:
Often a little quieter
Easier to find tickets outside peak season
Same spectacular scenery
If you're looking for a slightly more relaxed experience, this direction is well worth considering.
Which train class should you choose?
Choosing the right class can make a big difference.
Second class reserved (our recommendation ⭐)
For most travellers, Second class reserved offers the best overall experience.
Advantages
✔ Reserved seat
✔ Large opening windows
✔ Open doors between the carriages
✔ Authentic atmosphere
✔ Great value for money
This is also where you'll usually see travellers taking the famous doorway photographs. The combination of fresh mountain air, open windows and comfortable seating makes this the perfect balance between comfort and authenticity.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
If we had to choose just one class, we'd book Second Class Reserved every time. The open windows, fresh mountain air and authentic atmosphere make the journey far more memorable than travelling behind closed windows in First Class.
First class
First class is the most comfortable option.
You'll enjoy:
Air conditioning
Spacious seating
Reserved seats
Large panoramic windows
However, because the windows are sealed, many travellers actually prefer second class for photography and enjoying the fresh mountain air. If comfort is your highest priority, first class is still an excellent choice.
Third class reserved
Third class offers the most authentic local experience. Tickets are inexpensive, and you'll travel alongside local commuters and families. Seats are simpler, but perfectly adequate for budget travellers. If you enjoy meeting locals and don't mind a less luxurious experience, third class can be a memorable choice.
Unreserved Tickets - Unreserved tickets are significantly cheaper but come with one major drawback: A seat is not guaranteed. During weekends, holidays and the high tourist season, trains often become extremely crowded. Some passengers spend the entire journey standing. Unless you're travelling during the quiet season or enjoy spontaneous adventures, we strongly recommend booking a reserved seat.
How to book your Kandy to Ella train tickets
One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is assuming they can simply arrive at the station and buy a ticket. While this is sometimes possible, reserved seats often sell out weeks in advance. Especially during December through April, it's common for popular departures to be fully booked. On one of our visits, we booked only a few days in advance and found that every Second Class Reserved seat had already sold out. Since then, we've always booked our tickets several weeks ahead, especially when travelling between December and April.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
From our own experience, booking three to four weeks ahead during the high season makes a huge difference. On one of our trips, we waited too long and every Second Class Reserved seat had already sold out.
Option 1 – Official Sri Lanka railways website
The cheapest option. Perfect if tickets are still available. However, the website can occasionally be difficult for international visitors to use. Look at https://srilanka-railways.com for tickets.
Option 2 – Travel booking platforms
Many travellers choose to book through international booking platforms.
Advantages:
Easy online payment
Instant confirmation
English customer support
Mobile tickets (depending on provider)
You'll usually pay a small service fee, but many visitors find the convenience worth the extra cost.
Book your train tickets in advance
Option 3 – Through your hotel
Many hotels in Kandy, Ella and Colombo can arrange train tickets for guests. This is a good option if you prefer someone else to handle the booking.
Option 4 – At the railway station
Tickets can also be purchased at the station. This works well during the low season, but reserved seats may already be sold out during busy travel periods. If you're travelling in peak season, don't rely on this option.
How much does the Kandy to Ella train cost?
One of the best things about the Kandy to Ella train ride is that it's incredibly affordable. Even First Class tickets are inexpensive compared to scenic train journeys in many other countries.
Below is a general overview of official Sri Lanka Railways ticket prices. Please note that fares may change slightly over time, and booking through third-party platforms or hotels usually includes an additional reservation or service fee.
Third Class (Unreserved) —> LKR 300–400 (US$1–2) —> Budget travellers and those looking for an authentic local experience. A seat is not guaranteed.
Third Class Reserved —> LKR 600–1,000 (US$2–4) —> Travellers on a budget who still want a guaranteed seat.
Second Class (Unreserved) —> LKR 600–800 (US$2–3) —> Affordable, but often crowded during weekends and holidays.
Second Class Reserved ⭐ Recommended —> LKR 1,000–2,000 (US$3–7) —> The best balance of comfort, authentic atmosphere and value for money. This is our recommended option for most travellers.
First Class Reserved —> LKR 2,000–3,500 (US$7–12) —> Comfortable reserved seating with air conditioning and panoramic windows. Ideal if comfort is your priority.
Please note: Prices shown are the official railway fares. If you book through travel agencies, hotels or online booking platforms, you'll usually pay an additional service fee. This extra cost often includes easier booking, English-language support and ticket confirmation, making it worthwhile for many international visitors.
Is first class worth the extra money?
Not necessarily. While First Class offers the most comfortable seats and air conditioning, many travellers actually prefer Second Class Reserved. The opening windows allow you to enjoy the cool mountain air, hear the sounds of the railway and take unobstructed photos of the spectacular scenery. For this reason, Second Class Reserved is the most popular choice among independent travellers and photographers. If you're travelling during the hottest months, have young children or simply value comfort above everything else, First Class can still be an excellent option.
Is it worth paying for a reserved seat?
Absolutely. A reserved seat guarantees that you'll have your own place for the entire 6.5 to 7.5-hour journey. During the busy tourist season, unreserved carriages can become extremely crowded, and some passengers end up standing for several hours. For most travellers, the small additional cost of a reserved seat is money well spent.
Our recommendation
If we had to recommend just one option, it would be: 🥇 Second Class Reserved. It offers the perfect combination of:
✔ Guaranteed seat
✔ Excellent value for money
✔ Opening windows for the best views
✔ Access to the famous open train doors (when it's safe to do so)
✔ Authentic Sri Lankan railway experience
Unless you specifically want air conditioning or extra comfort, this is the class we recommend for almost every traveller.
What is the best time to take the train?
The scenery is beautiful throughout the year, but some departures offer an even better experience. We recommend choosing an early morning departure whenever possible.
Benefits include:
Cooler temperatures
Better visibility
Softer light for photography
Lower chance of afternoon rain
More time to explore Ella after arrival
If you enjoy landscape photography, morning departures provide the best lighting across the tea plantations and mountain valleys. Late afternoon trains can still be enjoyable but may arrive in Ella after sunset, depending on delays.
Which side of the train has the best views?
One of the most frequently asked questions is whether you should sit on the left or the right side of the train. The honest answer? Both sides offer spectacular scenery, and the views constantly change throughout the journey. However, if you're travelling fromKandy to Ella, many experienced travellers prefer sitting on the right-hand side for longer stretches of open valley views, especially after leaving Nanu Oya and around Haputale. If you're travelling from Ella to Kandy, choose the left-hand side for similar views. Don't worry if your reserved seat is on the opposite side. Many passengers walk between the doors during quieter moments to admire the scenery from both sides of the train. We've sat on both sides of the train over the years, and honestly, there isn't a bad seat. The scenery changes constantly, so don't worry too much if your reserved seat isn't on the "recommended" side.
The most beautiful parts of the journey
Although the entire railway is scenic, several sections truly stand out.
Tea plantations around Hatton
Soon after leaving Kandy, the train climbs steadily into Sri Lanka's famous tea country. Here you'll pass endless rows of neatly trimmed tea bushes stretching across rolling hills. Early in the morning, tea pickers dressed in colourful saris can often be seen harvesting fresh leaves by hand—a tradition that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya
The area around Nanu Oya is one of the highest points along the route. The cooler climate, colonial buildings and surrounding forests give the region a completely different feel from the tropical coast. Many travellers choose to leave the train here to spend a night in nearby Nuwara Eliya before continuing to Ella the following day.
Haputale
For many visitors, Haputale is the absolute highlight of the journey. The train follows the edge of dramatic mountain ridges, revealing panoramic views over deep valleys, tea estates and distant mountain ranges. On clear days, visibility stretches for kilometres.
Demodara Loop
One of Sri Lanka's greatest railway engineering achievements is the famous Demodara Loop. Here the railway curves around itself in a complete loop while gradually descending through the mountains. It's a fascinating piece of colonial engineering and one of the most photographed sections of the railway.
Arrival in Ella
As the train approaches Ella, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Dense forests give way to towering rock formations and lush green valleys. It's the perfect introduction to one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful mountain towns. Arriving in Ella always feels like the start of a new adventure. After hours of mountain scenery, the relaxed cafés, cool climate and lush green surroundings make it one of our favourite places to spend a few days in Sri Lanka.
Can you see Nine Arch Bridge from the train?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions. No. Although the railway passes close to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, the train does not cross it during the Kandy to Ella journey. To experience the bridge, you'll need to visit it separately after arriving in Ella.
The best times to visit are:
Early morning
Late afternoon
During one of the scheduled train crossings
Watching the blue train slowly cross the bridge is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic travel experiences.
Want to know the best viewpoints, train schedules and photography spots? Read our complete information about the Nine Arch Bridge before your visit.
Photography tips
The Kandy to Ella train ride offers endless photography opportunities.
To capture the best images:
Choose a window seat: Opening windows allow you to photograph without reflections.
Keep your camera ready: The scenery changes constantly. Some of the best viewpoints only last a few seconds before disappearing behind trees or tunnels. We actually found ourselves putting the camera away more often than expected. Some of the best memories came from simply watching the scenery without trying to photograph every single view.
Use a fast shutter speed: The train is moving, so a faster shutter speed helps keep your photos sharp.
Respect other passengers: Many people want the famous doorway photo. Wait your turn and avoid blocking the doorway for long periods.
Enjoy the Journey Too. It's tempting to spend seven hours behind your camera. Take time to simply enjoy the views. Some memories are best experienced rather than photographed.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
Don't spend the entire journey behind your camera. Some of our favourite memories aren't photographs at all—they're simply sitting by the open window, feeling the cool mountain breeze and watching the endless tea plantations roll by.
Is it safe to stand in the doorway?
The open train doors have become famous on social media.
While standing in the doorway is generally accepted, safety should always come first.
We recommend:
✔ Hold onto the handrails.
✔ Stay well inside the train.
✔ Never lean outside.
✔ Be aware of tunnels, poles and overhanging branches.
✔ Avoid doorway photos while the train is moving quickly around bends.
A beautiful photo is never worth risking your safety.
Food and drinks on board
One of the most enjoyable parts of the journey is sampling local snacks sold by vendors walking through the train.
Popular options include:
Vegetable rolls
Samosas
Fresh pineapple
Mango slices
Peanuts
Rice and curry
Short eats
Fresh fruit
Tea
Coffee
Soft drinks
Prices are generally inexpensive, and buying from local vendors is a great way to support the communities along the route.
🍃Beyond Path Asia tip
One of our favourite moments is buying a freshly brewed cup of Sri Lankan tea from one of the onboard vendors shortly after leaving Hatton. Drinking local tea while travelling through the very plantations where it's grown is a simple experience that perfectly captures the spirit of this journey.
We also recommend bringing:
A reusable water bottle
Extra snacks
Wet wipes
Hand sanitiser
Facilities on the train
Here's what you can expect on most trains.
Toilets: ✔ Yes
Air conditioning: ✔ First Class only
Opening windows: ✔ Second & Third Class
Food vendors: ✔ Yes
Power sockets: ✖ Usually no
Wi-Fi: ✖ No
Luggage storage: ✔ Limited
Keep valuables close to you, especially during busy departures and arrivals.
Is the train suitable for families?
Absolutely. Many families consider this one of the highlights of their Sri Lanka holiday.
Children often enjoy:
Looking out the windows
Watching waterfalls
Passing through tunnels
Buying snacks from vendors
Spotting tea pickers
Meeting local children
To make the journey easier with young children:
Book reserved seats.
Bring colouring books or games.
Pack extra snacks.
Download entertainment beforehand, as there is no Wi-Fi.
Dress in layers, as temperatures become cooler in the mountains.
What should you pack?
A small daypack is all you'll need.
We recommend bringing:
Camera
Power bank
Sunglasses
Light sweater or jacket
Refillable water bottle
Snacks
Cash
Phone charger
Tissues
Hand sanitiser
Common mistakes to avoid
Many travellers make the same mistakes during this journey.
Avoid these common pitfalls:
Waiting too long to book reserved tickets.
Assuming every train has First Class.
Bringing large suitcases into crowded carriages.
Expecting trains to run exactly on time.
Standing in the doorway for long periods.
Planning another activity immediately after arriving in Ella or Kandy. On one of our trips the train arrived nearly an hour late. Since then, we've always planned a relaxed first evening in Ella instead of scheduling tours or restaurant reservations immediately after arrival.
Forgetting to bring cash for snacks.
A little preparation makes the journey much more enjoyable.
Beyond Path Asia tips
After helping hundreds of travellers plan their Sri Lanka itinerary, these are our favourite recommendations:
✔ Book Second Class Reserved whenever possible.
✔ Choose an early morning departure.
✔ Spend at least two nights in Ella after arriving.
✔ Combine the train ride with a stay in Nuwara Eliya or Haputale if you have extra time.
✔ Visit Nine Arch Bridge early in the morning for the best photographs.
✔ Don't stress about delays—they're part of the Sri Lankan railway experience.
