Koh Samui

Gulf-coast beaches, village evenings and a resort base that fits your season.

Plan your Koh Samui visit

Koh Samui is large enough that your chosen beach shapes the whole stay. Bophut, Chaweng, Lamai and the quieter northern or western areas offer different levels of activity. Decide how often you want to walk out for dinner before choosing an isolated villa with a beautiful view.

Suggested stay: 4–5 nights · Southern Thailand · Gulf Coast

The visit lengths and transfer ranges in this guide are planning estimates. Opening, access, weather and prices can change; use the linked official sources before a special journey.

Why visit Koh Samui?

Samui combines a dedicated airport with a broad choice of resorts and dining. It can be an attractive alternative to the Andaman coast when the seasonal pattern suits your dates. It also rewards a simple plan: one comfortable base, a few local outings and at least one day without a transfer.

Best things to do in Koh Samui

Choose a small number of priorities and group nearby stops. The suggested circuits leave room for heat, meals and slower travel.

Bophut and Fisherman’s Village

Walk the village streets in cooler hours and choose dinner nearby. Confirm current market evenings locally instead of assuming a weekly schedule. Busy nights bring crowds and traffic, so agree a meeting point and a sensible pickup place.

Inspect access, shade and water conditions before settling in. Different stretches of the same beach can feel quite different, especially with tides or seasonal waves. A resort pool is a useful alternative when the sea is unsuitable.

Wat Phra Yai

Visit the Big Buddha temple respectfully, covering shoulders and knees and following shoe rules. It fits a modest northern-island circuit rather than a rushed all-island day. Steps and heat can affect how much you want to explore.

Allow time to look at the temple’s statues and religious spaces without treating them solely as colourful photo backdrops. Follow local directions about feeding fish and entering buildings. Combine it with one nearby stop and a proper break.

Ang Thong Marine Park outing

Check seasonal park access, sea conditions and the exact boat programme. Compare time aboard, kayak supervision, life jackets and what is included in the price. A viewpoint climb is optional; do not choose a trip based on a guaranteed summit photo.

Confirm which paths and swimming areas are accessible before travelling inland. Wear grippy shoes and avoid wet rocks or closed trails. Do not include elephant riding or performances simply because they are sold near the same attraction.

A cooking class or market session

Ask about group size, vegetarian curry pastes and individual cooking stations. Book a session that suits your location rather than adding a long drive for a near-identical class. Keep the afternoon flexible after a substantial morning activity.

A quieter west-coast evening

Choose a planned sunset meal or a short coastal visit if conditions suit. Arrange return transport, especially from a more isolated beach. There is no need to move hotels for one evening on the other side of the island.

Your suggested Koh Samui itinerary

Suggested day 1

Day one: arrive, settle into your beach base and eat nearby.

Suggested day 2

Day two: enjoy the beach and combine Bophut with a relaxed evening meal.

Suggested day 3

Day three: choose a northern temple circuit or cooking class. Add an Ang Thong outing only when park access and sea conditions suit, keeping a free day as a buffer.

Use this as a suggested sequence, not a fixed tour timetable. Arrival and departure times may make the first and last days much shorter.

Where to stay in Koh Samui

Bophut suits evenings with restaurants; Chaweng offers a busier beach-resort setting; quieter northern and western areas suit resort-led stays. Compare beach access and gradients around hillside properties. A private pool does not remove the need for child supervision or a clear transport plan.

Essential travel tips for Koh Samui

Plan the day around conditions

Keep the most exposed walking for cooler hours, carry water and leave room for a rest. For boats, forest paths and swimming, follow the current local advice rather than a fixed itinerary.

Check the actual booking

Confirm the exact pickup, room or activity format, what is included and the cancellation terms. A similar name or photograph does not guarantee the same location or experience.

Respect the place

At temples, cover shoulders and knees and follow shoe rules. Ask before photographing people; at natural sites keep your distance from wildlife and take rubbish away.

How to get to Koh Samui

Samui airport transfers vary considerably by beach; allow roughly 15–60 minutes for many resort areas and longer for remote locations or traffic. Mainland routes add a road journey, ferry and island transfer. Check whether a combined ticket covers your actual hotel. A Surat Thani airport arrival is not equivalent to flying directly to Samui.

Best time to visit Koh Samui

Samui’s Gulf-coast rainfall pattern differs from Phuket and Krabi. Heavy rain can occur late in the year, particularly around the northeast-monsoon period. Some summer dates may favour Samui over the Andaman coast, but use the forecast and sea warnings for your actual trip rather than a guarantee based on month alone.

Hidden gems and details to notice

Give your chosen beach time before deciding to drive around the island. A smaller local market or a second visit to a favourite dinner street can be more satisfying than a long checklist of viewpoints. Compare the coast’s daily rhythm, not just the view from a resort photograph.

Koh Samui travel FAQ

Is Samui better than Phuket in summer?

It can be a sensible seasonal alternative, but the answer depends on the exact dates and weather. Compare coast-specific conditions rather than Thailand-wide averages.

Should I fly to Samui or Surat Thani?

Direct Samui flights reduce the number of transfers. Surat Thani can be cheaper but adds road and ferry travel; compare total door-to-door cost.

Which area suits families?

Bophut and several quieter beach areas can work well, but check the specific beach, road crossings, pool supervision and room occupancy.

Can I do Ang Thong all year?

Do not assume so. Check the current park calendar, operator schedule and sea conditions before booking.

How many nights should I allow in Koh Samui?

Our suggested starting point is 4–5 nights. Add time if you want several full-day outings or a slower arrival day; reduce the activity list before compressing the stay.

Do I need to pre-book every activity?

No. Reserve the activities or transport that are central to your route, but leave weather-dependent outings flexible and check current opening before a special journey.

Can I follow this guide with children?

Adapt walking distance, heat exposure, room occupancy and transport to your own children. Check the exact operator’s equipment and conditions; a general family label is not enough.

Are the accommodation links direct hotel bookings?

The buttons are clearly labelled Booking.com searches. Check the property, room and final price before booking; we may earn commission at no extra cost to you.

Where to go after Koh Samui

Choose the next base around your available nights and actual transport connections, rather than adding a stop because it appears nearby on a map.
