Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai — or both?

Choose a northern base that fits your time and interests.

For a first short visit, start with Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai gives a strong mix of old-city temples, food, cooking classes and optional mountain outings. It works well for three or four nights without changing hotels. This is our editorial starting recommendation when the north is one part of a wider Thailand trip.

What Chiang Rai adds

Chiang Rai adds distinctive contemporary temple and art sites, a smaller city and access to its own surrounding landscapes. The White Temple, Blue Temple and Baan Dam are not all in one central walking loop. Give it separate nights and plan the sites by direction.

The transfer is part of the decision

The road journey commonly needs around 3–4½ hours, with pickup and breaks adding time. A return day trip from Chiang Mai can therefore spend much of the day in a vehicle. It can work for travellers who accept that compromise, but it is not the same experience as staying in Chiang Rai.

How many nights?

With three or four northern nights, choose Chiang Mai. With five or six, a split such as three or four in Chiang Mai and two in Chiang Rai becomes more reasonable. With more time, slow down the existing bases before adding several remote excursions.

Food, walking and evenings

Chiang Mai offers more scope for varied neighbourhoods and repeated local walks. Chiang Rai can suit a smaller-city evening after a planned driver circuit. Your preference matters: neither city should be judged solely by the number of temple photographs it provides.

Weather and air quality

Both northern plans need a current weather and air-quality check. Late dry-season haze can affect outdoor comfort and mountain views. Do not use one city as a guaranteed escape from a regional air-quality episode. Keep the option to reduce strenuous outdoor activities or adjust the route.

The simplest combined route

Travel Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai, then check the actual onward flight connection to your southern base. Avoid backtracking to Chiang Mai unless the transport advantage is clear. The best route is the one whose flight and road legs work on your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Chiang Rai as a day trip?

Yes, tours operate long return days, but staying two nights gives more time at sites and less pressure to rush.

Are the main attractions similar?

They overlap in religious and cultural interest, but Chiang Rai’s contemporary art sites give a different emphasis from Chiang Mai’s old-city and food-based stay.

Should I skip the north during haze?

Check actual conditions and your health needs. Keep a flexible plan rather than deciding from a fixed month label alone.
