Koh Lanta or Koh Samui?

A slower Andaman island or a Gulf-coast resort stay.

Choose the season first

Koh Lanta and Koh Samui sit on different coasts, so compare your travel month before comparing hotels. The Andaman and lower Gulf rainfall patterns differ. A seasonally sensible choice still needs current forecasts, marine warnings and a flexible activity plan.

Koh Lanta: the slower stay

Choose Lanta for several nights at one west-coast beach, a modest Old Town outing and a relaxed rhythm. It fits naturally with Krabi and the Andaman side. The arrival usually involves road and ferry travel or a seasonal boat, so give it enough nights to justify the move.

Koh Samui: resort choice and a dedicated airport

Choose Samui for a Gulf-coast base with its own airport, a range of neighbourhoods and evening dining in areas such as Bophut. Direct flights can simplify the journey, while mainland arrivals add several transport legs. Compare the exact route and room total.

Meals and getting around

Lanta’s Long Beach or Klong Dao can offer a useful local dining pattern if the safe walking route works. Samui’s Bophut, Chaweng and Lamai have different levels of activity. On either island, an isolated villa can turn every meal into a car journey. Check this before choosing only by the pool photograph.

Families and swimming

Neither island has a universal family advantage. Compare beach conditions, pool safety, room occupancy, child seats and medical access for the actual property. A calmer-looking beach does not remove currents or the need for supervision. Keep a pool or land-based activity as an alternative.

Route fit

For Bangkok–north–Krabi, Lanta is the more natural beach extension. For a Gulf-led trip, Samui is the clearer fit. Crossing the peninsula solely to collect a second island name can add a full travel day. With two weeks, choose one coast and spend the saved time in your base.

Our practical decision

For a relaxed Andaman holiday in a suitable season, start with Lanta. For a Gulf-coast resort holiday and easier direct-airport arrival, start with Samui. Then check the actual flights and hotel before treating the decision as final.

Frequently asked questions

Which is easier to reach?

Samui is simpler if a direct flight suits your route and budget. Lanta may fit better after Krabi. Mainland-to-Samui travel can be more involved than either.

Which has better beaches?

That depends on the exact beach and conditions. Compare shade, safe access, swimming and the hotel’s position rather than a whole-island ranking.

Can I visit both?

Yes, but allow substantial transfer time. It is usually unnecessary for a short first trip.
