Choose Phuket when you want the widest resort choice and a varied island with its own airport and Old Town. Choose Krabi when limestone scenery, Railay and a smaller beach-base feel are the main draw. This is an editorial choice framework, not a ranking that makes one destination better for everyone.
Arrival and local travel
Both have airports, but the final journey matters. Phuket’s southern beaches can be a long road transfer from its airport. Ao Nang is a separate transfer from Krabi airport, and Railay adds a boat. Compare your actual flight route, luggage and hotel arrival time rather than airport names alone.
Beach days
Phuket offers a broad set of beach neighbourhoods with different atmospheres. Krabi’s Ao Nang is a convenient base, while Railay and Phra Nang offer distinctive cliff settings. In both places, swimming depends on conditions, flags and the exact beach. Do not make a choice on a generic claim that one coast is always calm.
Outings and bad-weather alternatives
Phuket Old Town offers food, architecture and museum possibilities away from the beach. Krabi Town gives a local contrast to Ao Nang, with kayaking and inland outings as other options. Boat trips in both destinations need flexibility; a land-based alternative should be part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
Hotels and meals
Phuket has a very broad resort market, but compare locations carefully. Ao Nang can make it easier to keep meals and excursion arrangements within a compact area. Railay or an isolated resort changes that calculation. Price the whole stay, including transport to restaurants and piers.
Should you do both?
With four or five beach nights, choose one. With a longer southern section, a split stay can make sense if the two bases offer a meaningful difference. Avoid moving purely to repeat a similar boat trip from a different pier.
How to choose in five minutes
Write down your flight, preferred beach atmosphere, room total and two most important outings. Add the transfer time and expected meal transport. If one option clearly reduces friction, choose it and stop comparing every beach photograph.

Sometimes, but not automatically. A boat-access or luxury stay can reverse the comparison; use live totals for equivalent rooms.
Which is better for a first Thailand trip?
Either can work. Phuket suits breadth of choice; Ao Nang suits a practical base with cliff scenery and a few outings.
Do they have different rainy seasons?
Both are Andaman choices. Compare current local conditions, but switching between them is not a reliable escape from the regional monsoon.
