Which Thai island is right for you?

Choose by season, transfer and the kind of days you want.

Start with the coast

Before comparing beach photographs, look at your month and the rest of your route. Phuket and Koh Lanta are on the Andaman side; Koh Samui is in the Gulf. Krabi is a mainland coastal base with boat access to Railay and nearby islands. You do not need to visit both coasts to have a varied trip.

Choose Phuket for range and a dedicated airport

Phuket suits travellers who want a broad choice of resorts, dining and land-based alternatives. It also has Old Town for food and heritage. The trade-off is distance and traffic: choose a beach base carefully, and avoid assuming every part of the island is a short drive away.

Choose Koh Lanta for a slower beach stay

Koh Lanta suits several nights at one beach with a few small outings. It generally requires a longer transfer than flying directly to a resort island. Compare Long Beach or Klong Dao with quieter southern bays, checking the exact room and seasonal services. It is a choice for pace, not for ticking off the largest number of attractions.

Choose Koh Samui for a Gulf-coast resort base

Samui has its own airport and a range of beach neighbourhoods. It can be worth comparing for summer travel when the Andaman pattern is less favourable. Direct flights may cost more than mainland-plus-ferry routes, but compare total travel time and hotel arrival before deciding.

Choose Krabi for cliffs and a flexible mainland base

Ao Nang gives restaurant choice and access to boat outings without sleeping on a separate island. Railay provides a more contained setting but needs a boat transfer. This can suit travellers who want scenery and a few day trips rather than a long resort-only stay.

A quick decision framework

If easy arrival and maximum resort choice matter most, start with Phuket. If a slower beach rhythm matters most, compare Koh Lanta. If your dates point towards the Gulf, compare Samui. If dramatic cliffs and day trips matter, compare Krabi. Then test the actual room price, safe beach access and transfer sequence.

Avoid the extra island just because it is nearby

Moving from Phuket to Lanta or from Samui to another Gulf island can be worthwhile with enough nights. With a short holiday, the extra checkout and boat transfer may reduce the relaxation you were seeking. One good base with a carefully chosen outing is a complete beach holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Which island is cheapest?

There is no fixed winner. Compare the complete stay, including airport or ferry transfers, meals and the exact room occupancy.

Which is best with children?

Compare swimming conditions, travel legs, room safety and supervision. A convenient beach base with a pool may matter more than the island’s reputation.

Can I combine Andaman and Gulf islands?

Yes, with enough time, but it adds a substantial cross-country transfer. For a first two-week route, choose one coast.
