Think in door-to-door journeys

A flight or boat duration is only one part of a transfer. Add checkout, road travel, check-in, waiting, luggage and the last journey to the hotel. Bali roads can turn a short map distance into a substantial transfer. Our destination estimates are planning allowances, not timetables. Ask the accommodation to confirm the exact pickup point and the transport provider to confirm what is included.

Bali by car and driver

A private car can be practical for moving between Ubud, Sidemen, Munduk, Amed and the south coast. Agree the vehicle, luggage capacity, hours, parking and return arrangement before confirming. Keep an inter-base transfer separate from a full sightseeing day unless the stops genuinely lie on the route. Walking conditions vary sharply between village lanes, steep hotel access and busy roads without comfortable pavements.

Java by rail and road

Trains are useful between established Java stations, with a separate road leg to mountain bases. Compare current services through the railway operator rather than constructing a tight connection from a generic journey estimate. Yogyakarta airport is outside the historic centre; include its airport connection. Malang, the Bromo villages and Banyuwangi are distinct stays. A night of travel followed by sunrise sightseeing is a demanding choice, not a rest day.

Flying between islands

Compare direct flight availability, airport locations and baggage terms against the complete sea-and-road alternative. The Bali–Lombok route can use a DPS–LOP flight; allow time for both ground transfers. The Java–Bali route can use the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry followed by a long Bali road transfer, or a suitable flight arrangement if available. Never assume a flight exists on your date until the airline sells the actual service.

Nusa and Gili boat connections

Confirm the named port, island pier, operator, luggage handling, check-in and lifejackets. Sanur is a common departure point for the Nusa islands. Gili Air connections involve the Lombok mainland or an inter-island fast boat; they are different journeys. Conditions can change or cancel a crossing. Keep a mainland night before an important flight and ask how a cancelled service is handled before paying.

Scooters and family transport

Do not treat scooter hire as a required part of the trip. Licensing, helmets, road conditions and insurance all matter; an international driving document alone does not establish the correct underlying licence. For children, confirm actual restraints, vehicle capacity and lifejackets with providers. Use a driver or another suitable arrangement when the proposed vehicle does not meet your group’s needs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book a car for every Bali day?

No. Group local walks and meals into slower days, and arrange a driver for deliberate excursions or transfers.

Can I leave Gili Air on the morning of my international flight?

Our routes keep a mainland buffer because a disrupted crossing can break that connection.

Is the shortest advertised crossing the shortest journey?

Not necessarily. Compare port transfers, waiting and the final hotel arrival.
