Lombok & Gili
Southern bays, forest foothills and island days with time between them.
Why visit Lombok and Gili?
Southern Lombok, Senaru and Gili Air offer different settings: spread-out bays, northern foothills and a small-island pause. Choose the combination around your time and preferred pace. A village or waterfall stay does not require a Rinjani summit trek, and a Gili stay needs its own boat and mainland return arrangements.
Lombok and the Gili Islands work well together, but they offer different holidays. Southern Lombok is a mainland stay with road trips between bays. Senaru is a northern foothill base. Gili Air is a small offshore island where the harbour connection becomes part of your travel day.
Decide whether you want beaches, village and waterfall outings, island time, or a deliberate mix. A Rinjani trek is a separate commitment with its own preparation and current access rules; you do not need to climb the mountain to enjoy Lombok.
One week
Choose two bases. Kuta Lombok plus Gili Air gives beach variety; Kuta plus Senaru keeps the trip on the mainland.
10–14 days
Allow time for the south, a northern stay and one Gili island, with unhurried transfers and a sensible final connection.
Best places to visit in Lombok & Gili
Kuta Lombok
Southern bays, Sasak culture and a beach base with room to explore.
Suggested stay: 3–5 nights
Senaru
Forest waterfalls, village paths and Rinjani views without a summit commitment.
Suggested stay: 2–3 nights
Gili Air
Island lanes, reef outings and evenings without another road transfer.
Suggested stay: 3–4 nights
Kuta Lombok is the southern beach base in this collection. Do not confuse it with Kuta on Bali. Senaru suits forest and waterfall days in the north; it is not a quick outing from every south-coast hotel. Gili Air adds a car-free island stay, although sand, uneven lanes and boat boarding can still make luggage and mobility planning important.
Tetebatu, Senggigi, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are additional options, but do not yet have individual guides in this collection. Use the three detailed guides above to build a supported first route rather than adding stops just to cover the map.
Three ways to organise your stay
- Choose bases
Cultural or countryside stay → selected coast - Protect connections
Transfer day → full local days → mainland return
Suggested sequence, not a geographical map. Add your accommodation, current access and complete return journey when planning the day.
| Trip style | Base combination | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland beaches and foothills | Kuta Lombok + Senaru | A proper transfer day and time for rest after outings. |
| Beach and island time | Kuta Lombok + Gili Air | Road and boat connections, including the final return. |
| A broader Lombok journey | Kuta Lombok + Senaru + Gili Air | Enough nights in each base; avoid one-night stops. |
| Bali and Lombok in three weeks | Selected Bali stays, southern Lombok, Senaru and Gili Air | Read the existing three-week route |
For an airport departure, compare a final mainland night with your actual flight time and the transport available. Do not rely on the first boat of the morning to make an important connection. If returning to Bali, add the onward road journey and a suitable buffer there as well.
Match your accommodation to the setting
Kuta and southern bays
A central Kuta address makes dinners simpler. A resort at another bay can offer a quieter setting but usually changes your daily transport needs.
Senaru
Ask about paths, steps, meals and the exact pickup point. A mountain view is a different promise from access to a particular waterfall trail.
Gili Air
Compare the actual side of the island, beach access and the walk from the harbour. Tide and reef conditions affect swimming; a beachfront room alone does not guarantee it.
Families and mixed groups
Check room occupancy, pool design and boat boarding needs. A mainland-only route is a valid choice when transfers would make the holiday harder.

Essential travel tips for Lombok & Gili
- Distinguish Kuta on Lombok from Kuta on Bali when booking transport or rooms.
- Give the north–south road journey its own space in the route.
- Confirm the actual mainland-to-island boat service, landing and luggage arrangement.
- Treat a Rinjani expedition as a separate undertaking with current official requirements.
Where to eat during your Lombok & Gili trip
Kuta provides a town dining base; Senaru properties can help arrange early or quieter meals; on Gili Air, choose a comfortable evening walk from the hotel. Ask specifically about fish sauce, shrimp paste and stock rather than assuming a vegetable plate is meat- and fish-free.

How to get to Lombok & Gili
Lombok’s airport (LOP) is a different gateway from Bali’s DPS. Compare current flights with the full journey to your chosen base. Boats from Bali require additional harbour transfers, check-in and allowance for changing sea conditions; the crossing time alone is not the transfer time.
For the Gilis, confirm the actual departure harbour, boat type and arrival point with the operator. Bangsal and other north-coast departure points serve different services. Ask about baggage, child-sized life jackets if needed, weather cancellation terms and how your mainland pickup connects.
A private car can be useful for a change of base on Lombok. Agree stops and the total itinerary in advance. If choosing a scooter, first verify licences, insurance cover and your ability to ride in the conditions.

Getting around during the stay
Arrange the southern and northern road stages and the island crossing separately. Choose the actual airport, harbour and hotel pickup points before comparing headline transfer durations.
When to go and how to travel thoughtfully
The broad drier months are often useful for a beach-and-foothills route, but they are not a promise of calm crossings or open trails. Mountain weather and marine conditions can differ on the same day. Check the current forecast and park announcements for any planned trek.
Lombok’s Sasak culture and predominantly Muslim communities give it a different daily rhythm from Bali. Dress considerately in villages and away from the beach, ask before taking portraits and check how religious holidays affect local services. On the Gilis, avoid touching coral or marine life and use operators who respect the reef.

Hidden gems and details to notice
Three settings, three different days
Kuta’s bays, Senaru’s paths and Gili Air’s lanes are not interchangeable. A small number of well-chosen bases produces more contrast than a succession of brief hotel stops.
Mainland and island nights differ
Keep the final mainland connection and flight plan in mind when choosing how many nights to spend on Gili Air.
A waterfall stay is not a summit trek
Enjoy the village and foothill landscape on its own terms. A multi-day expedition needs a different allocation of time, equipment and preparation.
Lombok & Gili travel FAQ
Should I visit all three main Gili islands?
Usually one island is enough for a short trip. Choose a base for the atmosphere and accommodation you want; moving repeatedly adds packing and boat handling.
Can I visit Senaru without climbing Rinjani?
Yes. A foothill stay and local outings can be the purpose of the visit. Check trail conditions and choose walks that suit your group.
Is Lombok just a quieter version of Bali?
It has its own culture, geography and travel patterns. Choose it for the places you want to experience, rather than expecting the same holiday with fewer people.
Do I need a boat to enjoy Lombok?
No. Kuta Lombok and Senaru can form a mainland route. The Gili Islands are an optional addition, not a requirement.
How should I plan my first full day?
Choose one main outing from the itinerary and add a meal and a proper break. Keep arrival, departure and long transfers separate from full sightseeing days.
Do I need local transport?
Arrange the southern and northern road stages and the island crossing separately. Choose the actual airport, harbour and hotel pickup points before comparing headline transfer durations.
What should I check before booking a room?
Confirm the exact location, room category, beds, permitted guests and every child’s age. Compare access to meals and outings as well as the room photographs.
Can I find vegetarian or vegan food?
Discuss ingredients and cooking stock with the kitchen or boat operator. Use the food section above and confirm the full dish rather than assuming that a vegetable name is enough.
What if weather or access changes?
Choose a shorter local alternative and follow current official or operator guidance. A published itinerary is a planning suggestion, not a promise that every outing will run.
Which destination should I visit next?
Use the onward-travel section below and choose around the nights and complete connection available. Avoid adding another island without giving it its own travel time.
Where to go after Lombok & Gili
Choose the next stage around your available nights and complete transport connection.
- Bali — Return with adequate mainland time before an important flight.
- Kuta Lombok — Use a southern base for selected bays and a mainland airport finish.
- Senaru — Add village and waterfall time without assuming a summit expedition.
