Practical preparation for a slower, better connected island journey.

Choose fewer bases before adding more sights

A first trip does not need Java, Bali and Lombok in one fortnight. Choose the landscapes and activities that matter most, then count usable days between the transfers. Three nights normally leave two full days, depending on arrival and departure. Give a long journey its own space and leave the next morning flexible if it follows a late arrival.

Prepare documents and offline information

Check the visa, arrival declaration and any Bali levy through official channels. Keep hotel addresses, tickets and provider contacts offline, with secure copies of essential documents. A saved map pin is useful, but also retain the hotel’s written arrival directions. Tell the driver which entrance or pier the accommodation actually uses; a property name alone may not resolve the final approach.

Pack for the specific route

Light clothing, a respectful temple outfit, sun protection and comfortable footwear cover many town and countryside days. Mountain bases need appropriate warm layers; the climate there differs from a beach resort. Check luggage handling and waterproof protection for a boat journey. Do not assume a wheeled suitcase can roll from the harbour to every island room.

Respect communities and living religious sites

Ask before photographing people, ceremonies and private compounds. Follow local access rules, stay clear of offerings and leave working rice terraces intact. In Bali, a ceremony can change traffic or access for the day; ask locally instead of assuming a published route is fixed. Choose a named local guide when context or permissions will improve the visit.

Book the important arrangements clearly

Confirm the exact room, occupants, beds, luggage, vehicle capacity and cancellation terms. For an activity, ask what is included and what happens if conditions change. Keep key communications in writing. Save room for unplanned meals and rest rather than reserving an outing for every available hour; a good itinerary remains enjoyable when one famous viewpoint is clouded over.
