Ask what kind of site you are entering

A Balinese temple, a Javanese royal setting and a major heritage monument have different access arrangements. Check the official visitor rules and follow instructions at the entrance. A guide can help explain context, but paying for a tour does not give permission to enter a closed courtyard or interrupt worship.

Dress and access in Bali

Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees and follow the site’s sarong and sash requirements. Requirements can include restrictions connected to menstruation or other local ritual conditions; check and respect the particular temple’s rules. Do not assume a borrowed wrap changes every access restriction. Keep sacred inner areas for those permitted to enter.

Offerings, ceremonies and photographs

Look where you walk and leave offerings in place. Give processions and worshippers room, ask before photographing people, and avoid posing on sacred structures. A ceremony may change access or roads; adapt your plan instead of treating that as a failed sightseeing appointment. Turn down music and phone calls and follow the tone of the setting.

Borobudur and Prambanan

Check current ticket types, entry arrangements, visitor capacity and permitted areas through the official operator. Grounds access and access to a monument’s upper structure are different booking questions. Follow footwear and route instructions where they apply. A respectful, informative ground-level visit can still be worthwhile if the desired upper access is unavailable.

Make the visit manageable

Choose a limited number of sites, bring water and allow time for shade and explanation. Children can engage with a short visit and a clear story more easily than a rushed circuit of many temple names. If a site is closed or the group is tired, use a nearby town activity and leave the remaining temples for another day.
