Best time to visit Cambodia
Choose the season around temple walking, road journeys and time by the sea.
Start with the trip you want
A temple-focused trip and an island holiday do not have identical weather priorities. For Angkor, think about heat, shade and how long you want to walk. For Koh Rong or Koh Rong Sanloem, boat conditions and the experience at your chosen bay matter too. Decide which part of the journey is least flexible before choosing dates; a colourful monthly chart cannot guarantee a pleasant crossing or a clear sunrise.
Dry-season planning
The broadly drier part of the year is often the simplest starting point for a mixed city-and-coast route, but conditions still vary. Cooler mornings make a longer temple visit more comfortable. As heat builds, shorten exposed walking and move a meal or hotel break into the middle of the day. Book the room and essential transfers that matter most, leaving room to change optional excursions.
Travelling in the wetter months
Rain can bring greener countryside and a different river landscape. It can also affect rural access, forest footing and ferry comfort. Choose accommodation where a wet afternoon would still be enjoyable, and contact operators about the actual conditions. Keep boat outings flexible and allow a mainland night before a major flight. The right response to unsuitable conditions is a different day, not a more ambitious schedule.
Match each region to the forecast
Siem Reap and Phnom Penh need practical heat and rain plans throughout the year. Kampot and Kep add rural roads and coastal outings. Kratie’s river conditions influence island and wildlife visits; Mondulkiri’s walking programmes depend on terrain. Check the destination page and the forecast shortly before travel, then confirm the activity rather than relying entirely on weather averages.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one perfect month for all of Cambodia?
No. Use your main activities to decide: temple walking, highland trails and island crossings respond differently to weather.
Should I rule out the rainy season?
Not automatically. Build a route with flexibility, suitable accommodation and realistic alternatives; check current local conditions.
Will a dry-season booking guarantee calm seas?
No. Current sea conditions and the operator’s decision still determine whether a crossing or excursion is appropriate.
