Phnom Penh
Royal courtyards, Khmer art and time to understand Cambodia’s recent history.
Plan your Phnom Penh visit
Why visit Phnom Penh?
Phnom Penh deserves more than an airport night. The city brings royal architecture, museums and contemporary daily life together, but traffic and heat make a compact plan worthwhile. Keep the difficult historical visits separate from a packed sightseeing circuit, and choose a hotel around the area in which you expect to spend your evenings.
Best things to do in Phnom Penh
Royal Palace area
Give the palace precinct its own morning rather than fitting it between several cross-city drives. Dress appropriately and check current opening and access before travelling; official functions may affect what can be visited. A shaded meal afterwards creates a natural break. Follow the permitted visitor route and do not assume that every building in a working royal compound is open.
National Museum
Use the museum to put Khmer sculpture and the Angkor temples into context. Choose a small number of objects to study rather than trying to absorb every gallery. The courtyard offers a welcome change of pace, and the museum pairs geographically with the palace area. Reconfirm ticketing and visiting arrangements through the museum’s own information.
Wat Phnom
Wat Phnom is a shorter cultural stop around a leafy hill, useful when you want something more contained than another full museum visit. Wear suitable clothing, allow for steps and keep valuables secure in busy areas. Combine it with a nearby meal or a limited neighbourhood walk, not a long list of distant attractions in the afternoon heat.
Riverside and reflective history
The riverfront works as a pause at the beginning or end of a day. For recent history, choose Tuol Sleng and, if appropriate, Choeung Ek as thoughtful visits with time afterwards to decompress. Their content is distressing and not automatically suitable for children. Decide as a family in advance; a museum or riverside day is a valid alternative.

Where to stay in Phnom Penh
Daun Penh puts the palace, museum and riverside within a relatively compact part of the city. BKK1 offers many restaurants but different daily journeys. Compare the exact street, evening transport and room noise; a river-view label alone is not enough to choose a base.
Price tiers (€ to €€€€) are editorial categories, not live quotes. Property images are from the linked official sites and may show a particular room or shared area.

Plantation Urban Resort & Spa
Indicative price: €€€
Best for: Families and travellers wanting a central resort-style pause
Location: Street 184, Daun Penh
Main advantage: A garden setting with family room categories on the property’s own site.
Trade-off: Check the precise family-room occupancy and beds; do not infer capacity from a hotel-wide family label.

Pavilion
Indicative price: €€€
Best for: Adults seeking a quiet heritage retreat
Location: Street 19, near the palace area
Main advantage: Period buildings and garden pools create a different atmosphere from a large city hotel.
Trade-off: The property states a minimum staying-guest age of 16. It is not a choice for families with younger children.

Where to eat in Phnom Penh
These are researched places to consider, not a claim of personal visits. Reconfirm service and discuss allergies or dietary requirements directly.
Malis Phnom Penh
136 Norodom Boulevard
A Khmer restaurant for a planned meal. Discuss vegetarian dishes and fish-based seasonings directly; a vegetable dish is not automatically vegetarian.
La Pergola at Plantation
28 Street 184
A hotel dining option near the palace and museum area; check non-resident reservations and current service.
How to get to Phnom Penh
Techo International Airport uses code KTI. Check the airport on your actual ticket rather than relying on old Phnom Penh airport information. Allow approximately 60–90 minutes for a city transfer in ordinary planning, with more margin for traffic. Kampot is often a 3–4 hour road journey; Siem Reap and Sen Monorom each require a longer travel block.
Best time to visit Phnom Penh
Plan exposed visits and walking for cooler hours throughout the year. Heavy rain and traffic can stretch a short-looking journey; leave flexibility around airport transfers and do not schedule a major cross-city excursion immediately before departure.
Hidden gems and details to notice
Notice the city’s different scales: a palace courtyard, a riverside promenade and a busy restaurant street create very different experiences. Keep a few hours free to sit down and observe daily life rather than using the city only as a transfer hub.
Phnom Penh travel FAQ
Which Phnom Penh airport should I use?
Match the airport code to the booking. Techo International Airport is KTI; older articles about PNH can describe a different transfer.
Are the genocide memorial sites suitable for young children?
Their material is distressing. Read what the visit involves and make a deliberate family decision; do not treat them as compulsory stops.
Is two nights enough?
Two nights usually leave one full day. Choose a compact cultural programme; add a third night if you want separate reflective history and city days.
Is Pavilion suitable for our family?
Only if the party meets the property’s minimum age policy. For younger children, compare Plantation’s actual family room categories and confirm all occupants.
