Begin with a few Khmer dishes

Fish amok, lok lak and Khmer curries are common menu starting points, but their preparation varies by restaurant. Treat a food outing as a chance to learn about ingredients and regional preferences rather than trying every famous dish in one sitting. Markets can be interesting for a guided introduction; choose cooked-to-order food and a setting whose hygiene and handling you can assess.

Vegetarian is an ingredient conversation

A vegetable or tofu dish may still contain fish sauce, prahok, shrimp paste, meat stock or an animal-based garnish. Ask explicitly about sauces and cooking liquid, then confirm what the kitchen can prepare separately. For a strict diet or serious allergy, written information and direct communication with the restaurant are more useful than a general vegetarian label on a travel guide.

Where to start in the main towns

In Siem Reap, consider HAVEN and Viroth’s Restaurant; check the separate restaurant and hotel addresses. In Phnom Penh, Malis and Plantation’s dining are useful named starting points. In Battambang, check Jaan Bai’s current service. Kampot’s Rikitikitavi terrace and the restaurant at Sabay Beach are different locations, with the latter requiring an upriver journey from town.

Coast, islands and the northeast

Kep’s Crab Market is seafood-focused; plan a named restaurant if vegetarian preparation matters. On the islands, compare the accommodation’s actual dining options and access to other restaurants before booking a long stay. Le Tonlé is a named Kratie option, while a lodge or resort restaurant can be practical around Sen Monorom. Confirm service for outside guests and the return transport before travelling for a meal.

Plan one meaningful meal, not a rigid food timetable

Opening days, menus and availability change. Reserve the meal that matters most and keep another nearby option. A relaxed lunch can protect a hot temple day or a long transfer day from becoming exhausting. For a family, agree portions and sharing after seeing the menu and preserve some flexibility for familiar food alongside new dishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is food labelled vegetable always vegetarian?

No. Ask about fish sauce, shrimp paste, fermented fish and stock as well as the visible main ingredients.

Can I rely on this page for a serious allergy?

Discuss the specific allergy, cross-contact and preparation directly with the kitchen. A general dietary label does not establish safety.

Do all hotel restaurants accept outside guests?

No. Check service, reservations and access before making a special journey, particularly at remote beach properties.
