Plan your Kampot visit
Why visit Kampot?
Kampot is a place to slow the route down. Choose between a town base, where meals are straightforward, and an upriver retreat, where the setting becomes the main activity. A pepper-farm visit, a short river outing and a day in Kep are enough to shape several days without filling every hour.
Best things to do in Kampot
River and town
Walk a compact section of the riverside and the older streets, pausing for a meal or coffee. This is an easy arrival-day plan and does not need an organised tour. Keep swimming decisions separate from the scenic appeal of the river: ask about the precise access point, currents and water conditions rather than assuming every waterfront property has a safe swimming area.
Pepper-farm visit
Choose a named farm with its own visitor information and learn how the pepper is grown and processed. Ask what the visit includes, whether a tasting or meal is extra and how you will get there. A farm outing can form the main half-day rather than one stop in a very long loop. Buy what you actually want, without treating a tasting as an obligation.
Old streets and salt-country views
The town’s shophouses and the surrounding working landscape offer a quieter alternative to a long excursion. Salt production is seasonal, so do not promise an active harvest on a particular day. If travelling into the countryside, agree a sensible route and avoid entering work areas or private land without permission. Late light can be attractive, but arrange the return before dark.
Salt-country landscapes
The salt fields outside town reveal a working landscape shaped by the coast. Production depends on dry weather, so an active harvest is never guaranteed. Ask a local driver about present conditions, keep out of private work areas and plan the return before dark. Combine this short outing with the old town rather than treating it as another full-day excursion.

Rikitikitavi Terrace Restaurant
Riverside Road, Kampot
An upstairs riverside dining option with Khmer and international dishes. Confirm a table and discuss fish sauce or stock in vegetarian orders.

How to get to Kampot
Phnom Penh to Kampot commonly needs roughly 3–4 hours by road. Kep is approximately 30–60 minutes away depending on the endpoints. For an island transfer, allow about 2.5–4 hours to the appropriate Sihanoukville port plus check-in, waiting and the boat; confirm the operator’s actual pier and do not book a tight connection.
Best time to visit Kampot
The south can be very wet in the rainy season. Rain changes the appeal of river activities and rural roads; dry-season warmth still calls for shade and breaks. Choose the accommodation for how you would spend a rainy afternoon, not only its photographs in sunshine.
Hidden gems and details to notice
Town and upriver stays are different versions of Kampot. The view from a quiet terrace may be the reason to choose a remote property, while the ability to walk to dinner is the reason to choose town. Be clear which experience matters more to you.
Kampot travel FAQ
Is Sabay Beach on the sea?
No: the property describes an upriver Kampot setting. Choose it for the river rather than expecting a seaside beach.
Should I stay in both Kampot and Kep?
Only if the different evenings and accommodation justify another move. Kep can also be a day trip from Kampot.
Can I combine a road transfer and island ferry?
Often a complete travel day is possible, but use confirmed endpoints and a generous buffer. Do not treat the driving estimate as the whole journey.
Do I need a full-day tour every day?
No. A farm visit, short local outing and time at the river can be a more satisfying stay than repeated long circuits.
