Cambodia travel budget
A practical way to budget for rooms, temples, transfers and a beach finish.
Build a trip total before a daily average
Separate accommodation, intercity transport, local journeys, meals, entrance tickets and optional activities. A temple pass, private transfer or island boat can make one day much more expensive than a quiet day in town. Budget by the actual route and number of travellers first, then calculate an average if useful. Include the final mainland night and airport transfer rather than spending the whole budget on the headline beach stay.
Working daily allowances
For an initial planning exercise, two adults sharing one room might set aside about US$60–90 a day for a simple independent trip, US$110–180 for a comfortable mixed route, or US$220 and above for a more resort-focused trip. These are editorial budget envelopes, not current package quotes, and exclude international flights, insurance and major one-off activities. Replace each allowance with actual room and transport quotes before making a financial commitment.
The costs that are easy to miss
Check whether room rates include taxes, breakfast and the bed setup you require. For islands, add the correct ferry and the last transfer to the property. A resort with few outside dining options changes the meal budget. For Angkor, compare the current official pass against your planned visiting days; transport and a guide are separate decisions. Include cash for small purchases and a contingency that remains available until departure.
Families need room-based calculations
Do not multiply a couple’s daily allowance by the number of children. Price the actual combination of rooms, permitted occupants, extra beds and breakfasts. A family of seven may need more than one vehicle or a larger transfer, and child ticket rules vary by attraction. Compare the whole booking, including luggage and the final transfer, rather than choosing a cheaper room that creates expensive daily travel.
Spend where it changes the experience
A well-located town hotel may save repeated taxis. An extra night can prevent a rushed temple circuit. A quieter beach that needs costly transfers may still be worth it if that is the main reason for the trip. Save by removing an unnecessary base or duplicated excursion before cutting the buffer that protects an international flight.
Frequently asked questions
Are these hotel prices?
No. They are broad route-planning envelopes. The individual room and transfer quotes determine your actual cost.
Is a private driver always cheaper for a family?
Not always. Compare the complete vehicle quote, capacity, child restraints where available, luggage, waiting and any accommodation required for the driver.
Should I pay everything in advance?
Use the booking and cancellation terms of the provider, keep records and avoid paying an unknown intermediary solely because it offers a lower headline price.
