Komodo National Park
Wild islands, ranger-led walks and sea days chosen with care.
Why visit Komodo National Park?
The appeal combines wild island landscapes, ranger-led wildlife visits and marine experiences chosen around your ability. The park is a boat-based outing from a mainland or island base, not a town where the usual hotel-and-walking itinerary applies. A good visit begins with the operator, permitted destinations and conditions rather than a promise to complete every famous stop.
Komodo National Park is an island and marine destination reached by boat, usually from Labuan Bajo on Flores. The town, Komodo Island and the national park are different places. A tour labelled “Komodo” may combine several islands, a ranger-led wildlife walk and swimming stops. Read the actual itinerary before comparing prices.
Start with the experience you want: seeing dragons, a landscape walk, snorkelling, diving, or time on a boat. A longer list of stops does not necessarily create a better day. Boat quality, group size, weather decisions and time ashore matter just as much.
Mainland-based visit
Stay in Labuan Bajo and choose a suitable day excursion. Keep arrival and departure days separate from the main boat day.
Overnight sailing
Choose this because you want to live aboard as part of the holiday. Compare the actual cabin, facilities, sailing plan and cancellation conditions.

Best things to do in Komodo National Park

Ranger-led dragon walks
Komodo and Rinca are the best-known islands for visitor walks to see Komodo dragons. Follow the ranger or naturalist guide, stay on the permitted route and give wildlife space. An encounter is never a petting or feeding activity.
Planning allowance: Within the permitted guided park visit. Confirm the complete route and current access with the provider.
Padar’s island views
Padar is known for its ridge and bays. The climb involves steps, exposed conditions and heat. Ask about the current permitted visiting session, the route and whether everyone in your group wants to do it. A viewpoint walk need not be compulsory.
Planning allowance: Within the agreed sailing itinerary. Confirm the complete route and current access with the provider.
Beach and snorkel stops
Pink Beach and reef stops appear in many itineraries, but exact locations and time in the water vary. Ask how swimming ability is assessed, what assistance is provided and what happens when currents or conditions make a stop unsuitable. Seeing mantas is never guaranteed.
Planning allowance: Within the operator’s conditions-led plan. Confirm the complete route and current access with the provider.
A dedicated dive outing
A sightseeing boat is not a substitute for a properly organised diving trip. Discuss certification, recent experience and suitable sites with a professional dive operator. Choose the trip around your ability and current conditions, not a famous site name.
Planning allowance: A separately arranged dive outing. Confirm the complete route and current access with the provider.
Day boat or overnight sailing?
| Option | May suit | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Shared day excursion | A mainland hotel stay and a defined park day. | Actual vessel, passenger count, shade, seating, toilets, safety briefing and stops. |
| Private day charter | Groups wanting more control over pace and stops. | What is genuinely flexible; park rules, sea conditions and permits still apply. |
| Overnight boat | Travellers who want boat life as part of the experience. | Cabin layout, ventilation, bathrooms, sleeping conditions, escape routes and return arrangements. |
| Dedicated dive boat | Qualified divers choosing suitable sites. | Guide ratios, emergency arrangements, experience requirements and equipment. |
Before paying, request the vessel’s name and recent photographs, operator details, passenger capacity, appropriate life jackets and the weather cancellation policy. Ask how the sailing is authorised and who makes the decision to change or cancel it. A glossy cabin photograph does not establish the vessel’s condition or operating standards.
Entry reservations, quotas and fees
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry announced a limit of 1,000 visitors per day from 1 April 2026. Availability and destination-specific visiting arrangements therefore matter; a boat booking alone should not be treated as proof of confirmed park access. Check the current rules through the park and your operator.
SiOra is the park’s official reservation system. The ministry’s guidance asks visitors and operators to arrange reservations by the day before the visit. Confirm who makes your reservation, the date and destinations covered, and how you receive the relevant confirmation. Book early enough to deal with availability rather than relying on the minimum lead time.
Request a written breakdown of the total: boat or charter, park entry, relevant activity charges, guiding, meals, equipment and transfers. Nationality, activities and the applicable tariff can affect what you pay. This guide deliberately does not reduce the full visit to a single headline ticket price.
Check the official national park information and ask for the current entry arrangements before paying a non-refundable tour balance.
Build a workable Komodo visit
- Mainland arrival
Hotel → briefing → rest - Excursion and return
Permitted boat or local outing → mainland buffer
Suggested sequence, not a geographical map. Add your accommodation, current access and complete return journey when planning the day.
| Stage | What to arrange |
|---|---|
| Before arrival | Select your operator, clarify entry availability and check cancellation terms. |
| Mainland arrival night | Arrive in Labuan Bajo, check in and confirm pickup and the following day’s plan. |
| Park day or sailing | Follow the agreed route as adapted by the operator, captain and authorities for conditions and access. |
| Return to land | Keep time for a meal, rest and changes in the return schedule. |
| Onward connection | Use a suitable mainland buffer before the flight; add more margin for an important international connection. |
Do not attach a promised fixed stop order to a boat day. Distances, currents, visiting sessions and vessel type can change the workable sequence. If your main goal is a dragon walk, tell the operator before booking so the proposed itinerary actually supports it.
Where to stay for a Komodo visit
Labuan Bajo town
Useful for access to restaurants and some harbour departures. Confirm the pickup address and luggage arrangements.
Mainland coastal resort
Useful if you want comfortable days between excursions. Check transfer costs and which departure point the boat uses.
Offshore island resort
An additional island experience with its own transfer. Check how it connects to the park boat and your flight.
A cabin on a tour boat
Part of the excursion booking, with different comfort and safety questions from a hotel room. Clarify every boat night and the exact return day.
Compare researched mainland hotels in the Labuan Bajo guide. A property using “Komodo” in its name is not automatically inside the park.
Compare researched mainland bases
These hotels are on the Labuan Bajo mainland, not inside the national park. Keep their transfers separate from your park excursion.

AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach
Best for: A larger beachfront resort stay
Location: Waecicu Beach
Main advantage: Room choices and resort facilities for days between outings.
Trade-off: Independent town evenings need a transport plan; confirm excursion inclusions separately.

Sudamala Resort, Komodo
Best for: A beach-based stay with different suite and villa choices
Location: Labuan Bajo mainland coast
Main advantage: A choice of room settings for a stay centred on the property.
Trade-off: Check the exact room outlook, steps, transfers and whether the category fits everyone travelling.

Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa
Best for: A quieter villa-style resort stay
Location: Waecicu Beach
Main advantage: Several residence layouts, including options with two bedrooms.
Trade-off: Room categories differ substantially; verify access and town or boat transfers directly.
Essential travel tips for Komodo National Park
- Follow the ranger and permitted route on wildlife walks; never feed or approach dragons for a photograph.
- Ask how the operator checks swimming ability, currents, life jackets and the decision to change a stop.
- Compare the actual boat and passenger arrangements, not only a cabin photograph.
- Reserve suitable mainland arrival and return time around the excursion.

Practical tips for the day
Pack light but prepare for sun, spray and uneven surfaces: a hat, sun protection, drinking water, secure footwear and a way to keep essentials dry. Check the boat’s baggage and footwear arrangements before boarding. Ask about food requirements and equipment sizes in advance.
Stay close to the guide on wildlife walks, never feed or touch animals, and do not leave waste ashore or at sea. Respect coral and give marine life space. Drone use requires the relevant authorisation; bringing a drone does not grant permission to fly it.
For children or anyone with mobility limitations, discuss boarding, stairs, exposed decks and the actual landings with the operator. Swimming and viewpoint walks should be assessed individually. A shorter, well-chosen outing may suit your group better than an intensive shared itinerary.
Use BMKG’s Labuan Bajo marine forecast alongside the operator’s assessment. Read the wider Indonesia safety guide.
Food during a Komodo visit
Arrange meals through the actual excursion operator before departure. Ask what is included, when food is served, drinking-water provision and how dietary requirements are handled on board. A national-park outing should not depend on finding a restaurant at each landing.
Vegetarian and vegan meals on board
Discuss stock, seafood condiments, eggs and dairy directly with the operator. Confirm a suitable meal rather than relying on the description “vegetarian option”. Keep any personal food within the boat and park rules.
Mainland meals before and after sailing
Use the Labuan Bajo dining guide for the arrival and return evenings. Stay ashore with enough margin for a meal and rest before a flight.
How to get to Komodo National Park
Most visits begin with a separately arranged journey to Labuan Bajo on Flores, followed by the appropriate boat connection. Plan hotel, harbour and airport transfers separately.
Getting around during the stay
Travel within the park is organised by boat and through permitted landings. A sightseeing vessel and a dedicated dive operation serve different needs; choose according to the experience and ability of the group.
Best time to visit Komodo National Park
Check the current marine forecast, park arrangements and the operator’s weather policy for your exact dates. A broad dry-season label does not establish safe conditions at every landing or reef. Keep an alternative mainland day and adequate margin before a flight.

Hidden gems and details to notice
The itinerary is conditional
The order of stops can change with visiting sessions, sea conditions and the vessel. A shorter appropriate outing can be more rewarding than a long advertised checklist.
Wildlife is not a performance
Dragons and marine animals are free-ranging. Listen to guides, keep distance and do not treat a claimed guaranteed sighting as a reason to choose a boat.
Landings are part of the decision
Steps, ladders, exposed decks and uneven paths matter to the whole group. Ask about each landing rather than only the time spent cruising.
Komodo National Park travel FAQ
Can I visit Komodo as a day trip from Bali?
Build the visit around a mainland stay in Labuan Bajo instead. Flights, airport transfers, boat departures and park access make an air-and-boat day trip a fragile plan.
Do I need to stay overnight on a boat?
No. A suitable day boat and a mainland hotel are an alternative. Choose an overnight sailing only if the boat experience suits your group.
Does every tour visit Komodo Island?
No. Check the named islands and wildlife walking location. A tour may use Rinca or a different combination of park stops.
Is the park ticket included in the boat price?
Sometimes, but never assume it. Ask for the full written breakdown and confirmation of the reservation arrangements.
Will I definitely see dragons or mantas?
No wildlife encounter is guaranteed. Choose operators who respect the animals and accept changes to plans.
How should I plan my first full day?
Choose one main outing from the itinerary and add a meal and a proper break. Keep arrival, departure and long transfers separate from full sightseeing days.
Do I need local transport?
Travel within the park is organised by boat and through permitted landings. A sightseeing vessel and a dedicated dive operation serve different needs; choose according to the experience and ability of the group.
What should I check before booking a room?
Confirm the exact location, room category, beds, permitted guests and every child’s age. Compare access to meals and outings as well as the room photographs.
Can I find vegetarian or vegan food?
Discuss ingredients and cooking stock with the kitchen or boat operator. Use the food section above and confirm the full dish rather than assuming that a vegetable name is enough.
What if weather or access changes?
Choose a shorter local alternative and follow current official or operator guidance. A published itinerary is a planning suggestion, not a promise that every outing will run.
Which destination should I visit next?
Use the onward-travel section below and choose around the nights and complete connection available. Avoid adding another island without giving it its own travel time.
Where to go after Komodo National Park
Choose the next stage around your available nights and complete transport connection.
- Labuan Bajo — Return to a mainland base for rest, food and an adequately buffered onward flight.
- Bali — Choose a subsequent mainland coast or countryside stay with time for the flight connection.
- Lombok & Gili — Plan a separate island stage rather than assuming a short direct transfer.
