3 weeks in Vietnam
Six bases, one overnight train and enough time to connect the north with central Vietnam.
A selective 21-day journey
This route covers northern and central Vietnam in 21 days rather than attempting the entire country. It suits travellers who enjoy countryside, selected historical visits and a longer finish around Hoi An. An overnight train is part of the proposed structure; decide whether you want that experience before booking.
Route: Hanoi → Pu Luong → Ninh Binh → Phong Nha → Hue → Hoi An. Nights: 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 on the train + 3 + 2 + 5 = 20. Day 21 is departure.
Days and overnights
Days 1–3 · Hanoi · 3 nights
Arrive on day one. Use two full days for a manageable city introduction, with one main cultural outing at a time. Stay nights one, two and three. Read Hanoi.
Days 4–6 · Pu Luong · 3 nights
Take a road transfer on day four and stay nights four through six. Use one full day for a guided walk and keep the other flexible for a workshop or downtime. See Pu Luong.
Days 7–9 · Ninh Binh · 3 nights
Travel on day seven; stay nights seven, eight and nine. Separate your boat trip from the viewpoint or temple day. Confirm luggage storage and the day-ten station transfer before leaving arrangements to the last minute. See Ninh Binh.
Day 10 · Overnight train · 1 night
Take a confirmed southbound service from Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi with an overnight berth, subject to the timetable for your date. Train night is night ten. Do not assume every service has suitable sleeping accommodation or reaches Dong Hoi at a convenient hour. Reserve your actual berths and arrange the onward village transfer.
Days 11–13 · Phong Nha · 3 nights
Arrive via Dong Hoi on day eleven and stay nights eleven, twelve and thirteen. Keep the arrival day light after the train. Use the next two days for an appropriate cave trip and a flexible countryside day. See Phong Nha.
Days 14–15 · Hue · 2 nights
Travel on day fourteen, by a confirmed road journey or via Dong Hoi station. Stay nights fourteen and fifteen. Use day fifteen for the Imperial City and one tomb if energy and conditions suit. See Hue.
Days 16–20 · Hoi An · 5 nights
Travel on day sixteen. Choose a road transfer or train to Da Nang with onward road transport. Stay nights sixteen to twenty. Spread heritage visits, a workshop and optional beach time across the remaining days. See Hoi An.
Day 21 · Departure
Transfer to Da Nang for onward travel, allowing a generous buffer. For an early departure, replace the last Hoi An night with an airport-area stay. The route still totals 20 nights.
If you do not want an overnight train
Do not simply replace it with a full sightseeing day. One alternative is a daytime rail journey to Dong Hoi, a Dong Hoi overnight on night ten and transfer to Phong Nha on day eleven. Choose this only if the real timetable works. Another is to return towards Hanoi for a flight to Dong Hoi, with the extra road journey and flight connection explicitly planned.
If neither option appeals, omit a stop or add time. A travel structure that fits your comfort is more valuable than preserving every place in this sample.
Seasonal changes and families
Phong Nha cave activities and the central coast can be disrupted by heavy rain. In an unsuitable season, redesign this middle section instead of relying on every tour remaining open. Start with the weather guide.
For families, confirm berth rules, actual bed arrangements and arrival time. If a night train would cost everyone a day of recovery, choose a different connection or fewer stops. Our family guide explains the trade-offs.
What to book first
- Arrival into Hanoi and onward departure from Da Nang, including any international connections.
- The overnight train or your chosen replacement for night ten.
- Road transfers and any activity with strict age or fitness requirements.
- Accommodation only after the route and connections work. Destination guides include researched hotel suggestions with clear limitations.
