Hoi An travel guide

Lantern-lit streets, hands-on activities and a slower finish — with the right base for your trip.

How long should you stay?

Three nights give you time for the town and a second experience. Four or five work well at the end of a longer route when you also want free afternoons. Choose extra nights because you want a slower finish, not because there are five days of essential monuments.

Hoi An is a popular visitor destination. Expect busy areas at peak times and choose your outings accordingly. An early walk, a workshop and an evening meal can be more rewarding than trying to find an empty postcard scene.

Choose a base: town, countryside or beach

Near the Ancient Town: best for easy meals and evening walks; check room noise and the practical route back after dark. Rural outskirts: useful for a quieter accommodation-led stay, with transport planned. An Bang or another beach base: choose it when beach time is the priority and town visits are occasional.

A river view is not a sea view, and a hotel offering beach access may not stand on the beach. Check the actual map and room description. During unsettled weather, the ability to change activities matters more than a particular frontage.

What to do without overscheduling

  • Walk the Ancient Town: combine a small number of heritage buildings with time to pause. Check the current ticket arrangements for buildings you want to enter.
  • Try a hosted workshop: lantern-making or a cooking session can give the day a focus. Ask about group size, ingredients and what is actually included.
  • Explore beyond the busiest streets: choose a locally guided walk or appropriate cycle route rather than assuming all surrounding lanes are quiet.
  • Visit An Bang: only if the weather and sea conditions suit. A beach day is optional, and direct beach access is not a guarantee of suitable swimming.
  • Consider My Son: worthwhile for travellers who want more historical context. Keep it as a dedicated excursion rather than an obligatory addition to an already full day.

A flexible three-day rhythm

Day one: an early heritage walk, a slow lunch and a free afternoon, then return for the evening atmosphere if you feel like it.

Day two: a workshop or cooking activity, followed by downtime. Ask about vegetarian requirements before the session, including sauces and stocks.

Day three: choose beach time, a countryside outing or My Son. Do not book all three. With five nights, spread this pattern out and leave one day without reservations.

For families, an accommodation base that makes rest easy may be more useful than the most elaborate excursion list. See Vietnam with kids.

A riverside hotel to consider

A stay to consider

Little Riverside Hoi An – A Luxury Hotel & Spa

Best for: Travellers who want town access and a river setting

Location: Phan Boi Chau, by the river near the Ancient Town

Main advantage: A riverside base from which to explore the town without choosing an outlying resort.

Trade-off: This is not a beachfront location; river views depend on room category and beach outings require a separate journey.

For a beach-focused holiday, compare this with accommodation actually located at your chosen beach. For a larger family, request written confirmation of beds, connecting rooms and total occupancy.

Getting here and seasonal limits

Da Nang is the main air and rail gateway; finish the journey to Hoi An by road. Book your departure transfer around the actual flight or train and allow time for traffic and weather. From Hue, a car transfer or train-and-road combination are different travel experiences.

Late-year heavy rain and flooding can alter access and plans. Do not use a general sunny-Vietnam description to choose dates here. Compare the regional seasons and follow local advice when conditions are unsettled.
