Hanoi travel guide

A practical first stop: lake walks, layered history and good food, without filling every hour.

Is Hanoi worth including?

For a first journey through northern Vietnam, Hanoi works as both an arrival point and a destination in its own right. Give it three nights if you can: that leaves two full days after the flight and avoids turning the capital into little more than an airport transfer. If traffic and noise wear you out, alternate short outings with café breaks rather than planning continuous sightseeing.

Our suggested pace is one main cultural visit each morning, a meal and rest in the middle of the day, then a short walk later. Staying longer gives you flexibility if arrival delays or poor weather change the first day.

What to do: choose a balanced mix

  • Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake: explore a few streets at a time, then use the lake as a natural pause. A guided introduction can help you understand what you are seeing.
  • Temple of Literature: choose this for courtyards and cultural history. Visit early enough to avoid combining the busiest hours with midday heat.
  • A water-puppet performance: a seated option that offers a change from walking. Check the performance time and booking arrangements with the theatre.
  • Ho Chi Minh complex: useful for visitors interested in modern history. Check the mausoleum’s current access rules separately; nearby outdoor sights do not imply the mausoleum itself is open.
  • A small food exploration: choose a reputable guide or a few places near your base. Ask what is in broths, sauces and toppings if you avoid meat or fish.

A realistic two-day plan

Arrival: check in, eat close to the hotel and take only a short orientation walk if you have the energy.

Full day one: Old Quarter and lake in the morning; lunch and a rest; a water-puppet show or a second short neighbourhood walk later. Avoid booking a major activity tightly after your arrival.

Full day two: Temple of Literature or the Ho Chi Minh area, then a slower lunch and a free afternoon. You do not need both major cultural areas and every museum in one day.

Leave the next morning for Ninh Binh or Pu Luong. A sightseeing day trip is possible, but staying overnight in the countryside creates a different experience.

Where to stay

Old Quarter: choose it for easy access to restaurants and atmosphere; ask about street noise, lift access and windows. South and east of Hoan Kiem: compare it if you prefer broader streets while remaining near central sights. A map pin alone does not tell you how quiet a room will be.

A stay to consider

La Siesta Classic Ma May

Best for: Visitors who want a walkable Old Quarter base

Location: Ma May Street in the Old Quarter

Main advantage: You can begin exploring the historic centre directly from the hotel.

Trade-off: The central setting is busy, and room categories differ; check windows, outlook and sleeping arrangements.

Arrival and onward travel

Use Noi Bai for air arrivals. Arrange a recognised taxi, verified ride-hailing car or pre-booked transfer and allow a flexible arrival window. Check the pickup point for your terminal and do not plan the day around the shortest advertised driving time.

Hanoi connects by rail and road to other regions. Confirm the exact station, pickup address and luggage arrangements; a “Hanoi” bus departure may be some distance from your hotel. For Pu Luong, plan a dedicated road journey. See the transport guide.

Weather and practical limits

Autumn is often a comfortable time for walking. Winter can be cool and damp, while summer heat and rain make shorter outings useful. Pack for your northern dates rather than assuming the whole country is tropical beach weather.

Do not treat active railway tracks as a sightseeing platform or step past access barriers at Train Street. For children, choose controlled crossing points and stay together; traffic is a practical consideration, not an attraction to demonstrate bravery.

Add a bay cruise?

If you want time among the northern limestone seascapes, compare Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay before booking. Allocate the actual transfer days and cruise night, and avoid a tight onward flight connection.
