Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

Choose the itinerary, time on the water and onboard arrangement — not just the bay name.

Which bay should you choose?

Choose a Ha Long Bay itinerary if its particular caves, viewpoints or other named stops are what you want to see. Compare Lan Ha Bay if you prefer an itinerary built around the Cat Ba area and time on smaller boats or kayaks. Both offer limestone seascapes, and neither name guarantees an empty anchorage, a small ship or perfect water conditions.

The actual itinerary matters more than a claim that one bay is always better. Two cruises in the same bay can feel more different than two thoughtfully chosen cruises in neighbouring bays. Ask where the vessel travels, how many passengers it carries and which activities are optional.

Day trip, one night or two?

Day trip: choose it if seeing the seascape is the priority and you accept a substantial travel day from Hanoi. Compare actual hours on the water with hotel pickup and return times. A Cat Ba-based day trip is a different arrangement from a Hanoi day tour.

One night: adds an evening and morning aboard, but “two days” usually means boarding around midday and leaving the following morning. Read the check-in and disembarkation times; it is not two full days on the water.

Two nights: can offer a slower rhythm or a different second-day route, but check whether you stay on the same vessel or transfer to a day boat while the main ship collects new guests. Paying for another night should buy the experience you actually want.

Two published itineraries to compare

Bhaya’s Ha Long two-day/one-night programme: use the operator’s current itinerary to compare the included sightseeing, meals, cabin and optional transfer. It is an example to investigate, not a declaration that it is the best vessel for every traveller.

Heritage Cruises’ Lan Ha two-day/one-night programme: the published itinerary illustrates why the exact boarding marina matters: it describes boarding at Tuan Chau before the Lan Ha journey. Check the live programme and transfer inclusions for your date.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Which named vessel and exact itinerary am I buying, and can either be substituted?
  • What are the boarding marina, meeting time, transfer-boat arrangements and final drop-off?
  • How many cabins and passengers are aboard? What happens on the second day of a two-night stay?
  • Which meals, drinks, activities, entrance fees and transfers are included?
  • Are the advertised balcony, window and bed arrangement part of my cabin category?
  • What are the age, ability and equipment requirements for kayaking or other activities? Can I remain aboard or take an alternative?
  • What happens if authorities suspend sailings or an excursion changes? Get the refund or rescheduling terms in writing.

Children, access and water activities

Ask about suitable life jackets, boarding steps, railings, cabin occupancy and extra beds. A family cabin is not a guarantee that a larger family fits. Some transfers involve smaller boats, so ask how luggage and anyone with limited mobility are handled.

Kayaking and swimming are optional activities, not promises attached to a bay name. Follow the crew’s current instructions and local restrictions. Choose a cruise you would still enjoy if one activity cannot operate.

Weather and fitting the trip into your route

Spring and autumn are common planning starting points. Winter can be cool or misty; summer can bring heat and storms. Check current forecasts and sailing decisions instead of booking for guaranteed blue skies.

Add the cruise to your Hanoi stay by allocating its actual overnight and transfer days. If adapting the two-week route, replace a stop or add time; do not quietly turn 13 nights into 14. Avoid a tight onward flight connection immediately after disembarkation. Use the budget guide to compare the complete cruise cost.
