Vietnam travel budget guide
Build the cost of your route from real bookings, then decide where spending more changes the trip.
Start with a route, not a daily average
A single Vietnam daily budget is not very useful if it hides the room setup, transport style and included activities. Start with your nights, long journeys and any major experience such as a cruise. Then add meals, local transport and a buffer.
The example below is a planning exercise, not a survey of current average prices or a bookable package. Its chosen allowances show how the arithmetic works. Replace them with quotes for your dates, route and group before deciding whether the trip is affordable.
A worked example: 14 days, 13 nights, two adults
Assumptions: two adults sharing one room; a mixed local-and-restaurant food allowance; some paid activities; and a separate allowance for intercity transport. All figures are in Vietnamese dong. The accommodation figure is a chosen budget target, not a claim that any recommended hotel is available at that rate.
| Category | Calculation or assumption | Total VND |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 13 nights × VND 1,200,000 per room | 15,600,000 |
| Meals, snacks and drinks | 14 days × 2 adults × VND 350,000 | 9,800,000 |
| Local transport | 14 days × VND 200,000 for the pair | 2,800,000 |
| Attractions and guided activities | 14 days × 2 adults × VND 250,000 allowance | 7,000,000 |
| Intercity travel | One combined allowance for both travellers | 6,000,000 |
| Subtotal | 41,200,000 | |
| Planning buffer | 15% of subtotal | 6,180,000 |
| Illustrative total | For two adults, before the exclusions below | 47,380,000 |
The illustrative total is VND 23,690,000 per adult, sharing the same assumptions. This is an allocation to test against quotes, not a minimum or maximum you should expect to spend.
Excluded: international flights, visa or entry costs where applicable, travel insurance, shopping, major specialist activities and an overnight bay cruise. The VND 6,000,000 intercity allowance has not been priced against a specific service; replace it with the total of your actual road, rail and flight quotes.
Use the numbers to compare decisions
Changing a shared room target by VND 500,000 per night changes a 13-night total by VND 6,500,000, before any buffer. That is a more useful decision than saving a small amount on a coffee while choosing a much more expensive hotel category.
If you choose a private transfer, compare the total vehicle cost with the cost of seats for everyone, plus station or stop transfers. If a hotel includes breakfast or a tour includes lunch, remove that meal allowance rather than counting it twice.
For reference, Vietnam Tourism publishes indicative local prices, including around VND 25,000 for a sidewalk coffee and VND 45,000 for a street-food meal with iced tea. These are broad reference examples, not guaranteed prices or a complete daily food budget.
Price a cruise as a complete package
For Ha Long or Lan Ha, ask for the total covering your party, cabin, transfers, meals, compulsory fees and desired activities. Drinks, supplements and cancellation terms can change the comparison.
An overnight cruise replaces a hotel night and may replace several meal allowances. Remove those duplicate costs, then add the complete cruise quote. A low headline price is not directly comparable with a package that includes the transfers and activities you want.
What changes the budget most?
- Room arrangement: a solo traveller cannot simply take half a couple’s room bill. Families may need multiple rooms or a larger unit. Enter every child’s age.
- Moving frequently: every additional base can add a transfer, luggage handling and a less flexible travel day.
- Remote accommodation: an inexpensive room may require paid transport for meals and sightseeing.
- Peak dates and restrictive rates: compare the actual dates, taxes, breakfast, baggage and cancellation conditions.
- Special activities: price a cave expedition, private guided day or cruise individually instead of hoping it fits a general sightseeing allowance.
Where to save without weakening the trip
Choose fewer bases, use a location that reduces daily transfers and mix a handful of important paid experiences with free time. A well-placed simple room can be better value than a discounted resort whose location does not fit the trip.
Keep spending on the things you would notice: a workable bed arrangement, an appropriate transfer vehicle and a reputable operator for specialist activities. Do not remove those simply to make the spreadsheet meet an arbitrary daily target.
Use the 14-day itinerary or 21-day itinerary to establish night counts. Cost Ho Chi Minh City and the delta separately if you add a southern segment.
Money and a final booking check
Convert your complete VND estimate using the exchange rate available when you book, then allow for your bank’s fees. Keep the currency and assumptions visible so a stale euro or dollar conversion does not look like a fixed price.
Before paying, check the total payable amount, included taxes and service charges, deposit terms and currency. Keep a modest contingency separate from your everyday allowance; the 15% here is a planning choice, not a guarantee against every unexpected cost.
