Ho Chi Minh City travel guide

A southern starting point for history, neighbourhood walks and a journey into the delta.

How long to stay

Three nights work well for a first visit: arrival and two full days, with time to adjust to the heat and traffic. Two nights can work if you choose a small number of sights. Add a night if Cu Chi or another substantial excursion is a priority rather than trying to squeeze it into an already full city day.

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, makes a practical starting point for southern Vietnam. Combine it with the Mekong Delta as its own trip segment. It is not a short side trip from Hanoi or Hoi An; allow a real travel day for the connection.

What to prioritise

  • A central orientation walk: connect a few landmarks around Dong Khoi, the Central Post Office, the Opera House and Nguyen Hue. Check current access before planning to enter any building. The value is in understanding a small area, not covering every landmark in the heat.
  • War Remnants Museum: choose it for historical context, allowing time to process the exhibits. Some displays are graphic; parents should decide which sections are appropriate for their children.
  • Independence Palace: a different way to explore modern history through the building and its setting. Pick it deliberately rather than treating every museum as compulsory.
  • Cholon: consider a guided neighbourhood outing around markets and temples when you want a different part of the city. Include the journey there instead of treating it as another nearby stop.
  • Food exploration: choose a walking-based introduction or a few meals near your hotel. Explain vegetarian needs clearly, including stocks, fish sauce and toppings.

A realistic two-day plan

Arrival: check in, eat close to your accommodation and make the first walk optional. Avoid a fixed evening tour immediately after a long-haul flight.

Full day one: explore the central landmarks in the morning, rest after lunch and return for Nguyen Hue or a relaxed dinner. Keep the distance manageable and use recognised transport when walking becomes tiring.

Full day two: choose the museum or palace, then a quieter meal and a second short outing. If history is the main interest, use both full days for cultural visits rather than adding a long excursion.

Cu Chi: treat this as a separately planned half-day or longer excursion, depending on the itinerary and traffic. Check the walking, confined spaces and activities before booking. It does not need to be part of every family visit.

Where to stay: convenience versus setting

The central Ben Thanh/Dong Khoi area, traditionally described as District 1, is useful for a first stay. Compare nearby restaurants, the route to your main sights and the actual room outlook. A base traditionally described as District 3 can suit a museum-focused stay. District names remain common in travel listings; use the precise street address for transfers.

A stay to consider

Silverland Yen Hotel

Best for: Visitors who prioritise a central Ben Thanh base

Location: Thu Khoa Huan Street, near Ben Thanh Market

Main advantage: A central address for short outings and returning to the hotel between them.

Trade-off: A busy central location is not a promise of quiet rooms; compare windows, outlook and bed arrangements.

A stay to consider

Mai House Saigon Hotel

Best for: Visitors who want a hotel-led stay close to cultural sights

Location: Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, traditionally District 3

Main advantage: A base near the War Remnants Museum with larger accommodation categories to compare.

Trade-off: It is not the same walking base as Ben Thanh or the riverside; plan transport for some outings and check the actual room capacity.

Arrival, onward travel and season

Use the airport shown on your ticket and confirm the terminal and pickup point. Do not base your transfer allowance on an old minimum driving time. Match your taxi or ride-hailing vehicle with the booking and allow a generous airport buffer.

For the delta, decide whether you want a Ben Tre day trip, a rural overnight stay or a Can Tho base before arranging transport. Avoid booking a long delta transfer tightly before an international flight.

The south is warm throughout the year, with a generally drier period around December to April and a wetter period during much of the remaining year. Rain does not make the whole day unusable, but a weather warning needs a different response from a passing shower. Compare regional seasons and use the budget guide to cost the complete journey.
