Mekong Delta travel guide

Choose the part of the delta that fits your trip, rather than trying to see a whole region in one day.

Ben Tre or Can Tho?

The Mekong Delta is a large region, not one attraction with one arrival point. Start with the experience you want. Choose the Ben Tre area for a countryside-focused escape from Ho Chi Minh City. Choose Can Tho when an urban riverside base and an early boat outing are the priority.

A day trip can offer a worthwhile introduction, but it cannot represent the entire delta. Two nights in one base give you a full day and an easier rhythm. You do not need both Ben Tre and Can Tho on a short visit.

Compare the two bases

Ben Tre area

Best for: coconut-growing countryside, small waterways and a rural stay.

Main advantage: a natural fit for a short southern trip without moving between several delta towns.

Trade-off: rural accommodation needs planned meals and transport; it is not a base for every well-known floating-market excursion.

Can Tho

Best for: a city-and-river base, with early excursions arranged locally.

Main advantage: you can stay overnight close to the start of morning boat trips rather than drive from Ho Chi Minh City before dawn.

Trade-off: it is a substantial city; choose an actual riverside or rural setting if you want that atmosphere.

Day trip or two nights?

Day trip: useful when you have limited time. Ask for the exact places, time on the road, boat duration, group size and workshop stops. A longer list is not automatically a better trip. Choose an itinerary with meaningful time on the water or in a village rather than mostly transfers and shopping.

Two nights: arrive on day one, use day two for a locally arranged boat trip or guided cycle, and leave on day three. Keep part of the full day free to enjoy the accommodation. A rural stay should feel different from a compressed city excursion.

Three or four nights: add a second base only if it offers something you actively want. Confirm the inter-base journey before booking both hotels.

Floating markets: set realistic expectations

If Cai Rang is a priority, stay in the Can Tho area and speak to a local operator about current trading activity, timing and the route. Market life changes, and an old photograph is not a guarantee of the number of boats or the same scene on your morning.

Ask what you will do if activity is limited: a canal journey, village visit or food stop can still create a worthwhile outing. Avoid booking a distant hotel purely because its listing mentions a floating-market tour.

A stay to consider

Mekong Home

Best for: Travellers who want a small rural base in the Ben Tre area

Location: By the Ham Luong River, outside Ben Tre’s central streets

Main advantage: A family-run bungalow stay where the rural setting can be the focus of the visit.

Trade-off: It is not a Can Tho market base or a central town hotel; agree meals, excursions and transfers before arriving.

A stay to consider

Victoria Can Tho Resort

Best for: Travellers wanting a riverside resort with access to Can Tho outings

Location: On the Hau River in Can Tho

Main advantage: A garden-and-river setting for downtime alongside a city-based delta visit.

Trade-off: A resort stay is different from a village homestay; compare organised excursion costs and the exact room category.

A simple southern trip segment

For a six-day example, stay nights one to three in Ho Chi Minh City, nights four and five in one delta base, then travel on day six. That is five nights, not six. If day six includes an international departure, choose the final-night location and transfer timing around the actual flight; move back towards the airport when needed.

Our existing two- and three-week Vietnam routes focus on the north and centre. Adding this southern segment needs extra time or the removal of other stops. See transport planning and the budget guide.

Conditions and practical checks

Check life jackets, boat boarding arrangements, shade and total time on the water, particularly with children. For cycling, ask about bicycles, road surfaces, narrow bridges and the option to stop early. Treat private homes and workplaces as hosted visits, not open-access attractions.

The region is warm and humid. Ask locally about water levels, heavy rain and access before excursions. Plan an activity you can comfortably shorten rather than promising every outdoor stop will operate.
