Vietnam travel preparation checklist
A clear order for entry checks, transport, money, connectivity and the final details before departure.
Start with your passport and itinerary
Check the rules for the passport you will actually use, your purpose of travel, length of stay and entry point. Do this before buying non-refundable transport. Every child needs their own valid documents. People travelling on different passports may need different arrangements.
For Dutch passport holders, NederlandWereldwijd currently states that tourism visits of up to 45 days can be visa-free, subject to the listed conditions including onward or return travel. It states at least six months’ passport validity on arrival. This is not a rule for every nationality or purpose: recheck the official advice for your departure date.
Use official entry channels
The Vietnamese Immigration Department’s official portal is evisa.gov.vn. It states that e-visas can be valid for up to 90 days, with single or multiple entries. Eligibility, approved dates and entry arrangements still need checking for your application. Do not assume that applying guarantees approval or that the maximum validity is what you receive.
Check your name, passport number, dates and entry details against the issued document. Leave time to resolve errors. Do not rely on an unverified agent’s promise of an immediate visa.
Check current arrival-form and health-declaration instructions with Vietnamese authorities and your airline for the actual airport. Official national advice is not fully aligned on the current rollout: Dutch advice describes digital pre-arrival requirements at several airports, while UK advice describes a more limited arrangement. Confirm the applicable instruction rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Book the route in the right order
- Fix the international arrival and departure cities, then count the nights between them.
- Check domestic flights or trains and the full station or airport transfers before locking in remote stays.
- Choose accommodation areas, then confirm exact rooms and occupancy.
- Book time-sensitive outings only when their connection to the route is clear.
- Keep buffers before separate-ticket flights and after islands or mountain roads.
Use two weeks, three weeks or four weeks as structures. A transfer day is part of the trip, not spare sightseeing time.
Money and internet
Plan for a mix of card payments and Vietnamese dong cash rather than assuming one method works everywhere. Compare your own card’s foreign-currency and ATM fees. When offered a currency conversion by a terminal or machine, read the rate and charges before deciding; keep receipts and check the amount on screen.
For mobile data, compare a local SIM with an eSIM only after checking your phone’s compatibility and network lock. Read activation timing, coverage, allowance, hotspot use and identity-verification requirements. Keep maps and booking details available offline. A data-only product may not supply a local number or ordinary voice calls.
Transport and activities
Confirm seat belts, suitable child restraints where needed, luggage space and the final pickup address. A generic vehicle description is not enough. Keep a written record of the driver or operator booking and the procedure if the service changes.
For self-driving or motorbike trips, check current licence and insurance requirements for your nationality and vehicle category. For mountain, boat or adventure outings, ask about conditions, supervision and cancellation. The transport guide and Ha Giang guide explain the planning choices.
Health, cover and weather
Arrange individual pre-travel health advice in time for your itinerary and circumstances. Ask a qualified provider about vaccinations, mosquito protection, medicines and any relevant entry documents. This checklist does not prescribe medical treatment.
Check insurance for medical care, repatriation, disruption and the precise activities you intend. Save the emergency assistance details offline. Compare the regional seasons with current forecasts; do not mistake a usual seasonal pattern for a guarantee.
The final check before departure
- Documents: passport, issued permission where required, onward details and relevant child-travel documents.
- Bookings: room arrangement, included meals, baggage, transfer pickup and cancellation deadlines.
- Access: copies of essential confirmations stored securely offline; working payment and connectivity alternatives.
- Conditions: airline notices, weather alerts and local operator advice, with a plan to change course.
Use the accommodation guide and budget guide for the last comparison. Recheck official entry information shortly before travel, even if an earlier booking was correct.
