4 weeks in Vietnam

A 28-day route linking northern landscapes, central heritage and the south without pretending every destination fits.

The route at a glance

This 28-day, 27-night plan links Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Cat Ba, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and one Mekong Delta base. It favours time in each place over covering every region. Sapa, Ha Giang, Phong Nha, Da Lat and Phu Quoc are alternatives, not hidden additions to the same month.

Start by checking flights into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City. The domestic connections below are planning requirements, not confirmed services for your dates. Book the route only after checking the actual flight, transfer and accommodation sequence.

Total: 27 nights. Day 1 is arrival and day 28 is departure. Day 12 and day 20 are flight-and-transfer days, not full sightseeing days. Day 26 is the return from the delta.

Days 1–11: the north

Use four nights in Hanoi to recover and choose a manageable mix of neighbourhood walks, food and cultural visits. Travel to Ninh Binh on day 5, leaving two full days there. Avoid filling both with long stair climbs or multiple boat rides just because the sights are close on a map.

Day 8 is the transfer to Cat Ba. Arrange the complete road-and-island connection and verify the last leg, rather than buying disconnected tickets with little margin. Use one full day for a suitable bay outing and the other for a walk or rest. Do not automatically add an overnight cruise as well.

Return to Hanoi on day 11. This deliberately uses a hotel night: an island transport delay should not immediately threaten the next flight. If you prefer a cruise instead of an island base, compare Ha Long and Lan Ha and replace the Cat Ba nights rather than adding another stop.

Days 12–19: central Vietnam

Day 12 requires a confirmed Hanoi–Hue flight or a revised connection plan. Include both airport transfers and arrival time. With three nights in Hue, you have two full days for the Citadel and a selected second outing, without treating every tomb as essential.

Travel to Hoi An on day 15. If taking a scenic road transfer, agree the route, stops and luggage arrangements. Five nights give four full days for the old town, countryside and downtime. A beach day depends on current conditions. Da Nang is an alternative central base, not an obligatory extra hotel change.

Days 20–28: the south

Day 20 combines the road journey to Da Nang airport, a booked flight to Ho Chi Minh City and the final hotel transfer. Three nights in the city allow two full days before the delta.

Choose either Ben Tre or Can Tho for nights 23–25 using the delta comparison. Three nights give two unhurried full days. They are not an instruction to visit every river town. Return to Ho Chi Minh City on day 26, leaving two city nights before departure on day 28. This margin reduces pressure but cannot guarantee a disruption-free flight.

Swap destinations without breaking the arithmetic

  • For Sapa: replace the three Cat Ba nights and the day-11 Hanoi night with three Sapa nights followed by one Hanoi night. Recheck all road connections; keep the day-12 flight buffer.
  • For Ha Giang: redesign the northern block. A four-day road trip plus approach and return does not fit as a simple three-night island swap.
  • For Phu Quoc: replace the three delta nights and one final city night with four island nights, returning for the remaining city night. Confirm flights and decide if one buffer night is adequate for your tickets.
  • For Da Lat or Phong Nha: remove another regional block and price the actual connection. Do not keep the original night labels after adding new places.

Before booking

Check the regional weather guide, entry and preparation checklist and budget example. This is a north-to-south framework, not a guarantee that a single month brings ideal weather everywhere. With children or a preference for fewer moves, remove one base and redistribute its nights.
